If you had a retail shop selling cues your lease etc would be say £20,000 a year before you start, regardless of if you sold anything at all and to a smaller geographical audience & some of our cue retailers with shops appear on ebay as well craftsman/martin chesworth as examples.
On ebay i accept there's listing fees etc but at least you only pay the main fees when you've sold something so its sort of pay as you go, if you sell something you pay the fees if you don't you don't which could be considered an advantage.
I'm not defending ebay as such as clearly they are the real winners with all the sales that go through and the fees they earn from every transaction.

Interesting that this thread has appeared now as I've been watching eBay for a few weeks looking for some some cheap, old but straight cues in need of refurbishment to practice my refurbishment skills on, but the prices are an absolute joke just now. A combination of too many folk thinking old equals rare and valuable and people in general bumping their prices up to make up for the change in eBay fees meaning eBay now take a bigger cut than they used to.

Well thing is you've got people who use ebay to see how much things they've got might worth whatever the item it is, so if they look at cues and don't know much about them & they see these crazy prices, they'll just think great mine must be worth that then so it all goes out of control, with no sense or reason.
Others clearly know exactly what things are really worth and overprice regardless, which is whole a different story.

My point was really though if you have a retail shop whatever its costs buying or leasing you have things to pay straight away, rent, rates etc etc before you start without buying any stock.
On ebay you can put your money straight into stock, pitch to a world wide audience have no real set up fees as such other than stock ( don't even need that in some cases if you can source what your selling easy enough ) and pay the main fees when & if you've sold which does offer clear advantages.
Anyway didn't mean to side track your thread.......lol
