  • My Custom Mastercraft Review

As always, most important bit first...PICS!

Decided to travel to Mastercraft, very glad i did. What a top bloke. A few guys were there from Crewe i think getting there cues sorted. All very friendly and having a good craic. Nice cup of tea one of them made too!

Dave got straight to business replacing the butt joint to one of his in my unclevit. With no prompting he was very impressed with that cue. I had brought a mates Paris to get it re-ferulled but Dave said it just needed flatting off, so in the mahcine it went and that was sorted and re-tipped in no time.

As for my new cue, well it looks awesome. Exactly what i asked for in every department. Played with it today for a few hours and its a great player too, Butt heavy if anything but no overly so. Will play with it for 5 hours tomorrow and see how it compares to the unclevit.

All in all a great guy, great set up. Will get all my cue work done by him in future.

EDIT: Ive seen a fair few posts about Mastercrafts service, not responding to emails and such....After meeting the guy i would suggst the emails he doesnt respond to are the ones that he knows are pointless. He didnt say anything on this and i didnt ask about it, but the feeling i get is that for what he thinks are serious, doable requests he will reply with a day for two. Or you can of course just phone him!

He also asked me to let him have pics for his website (i will take better ones than these i was rushing and a new camera!) and let him know how it plays.

Great looking cue there, I think Dave is under rated on the forum compared to others cue makers.

If you want to play the pink, but you're hampered by the red, you could always try to play the brown!

Just remembered one thing Dave said...went something along the lines of ''i like my set up, dont want to get too big and have to employ lots of people. Just me and chris and thats how we like it. I just dont think any cue should cost £450, i dont want to rip people off''.

Very under rated and very helpfull , I think his sentiments are correct ,look at all the cue makers that are producing good work with a small team or just by themselves.I mean set ups like Dave,TW,MW,Trav,Craftsman,Coutts,Robin and NW , small can be best when it comes to quality control and I think sometimes larger manufacturers forget this.Beautiful cue Dave has made for you,I hope you enjoy many happy hours with it.

Yet another satisfied Mastercraft customer . . If your cue comes out anywhere near as well as what Dave and Chris knocked up for me you won't go far wrong Deepscrew. It looks a real beauty and you won't find many shafts like that at what I am sure was a reasonable price

I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head with everything you mentioned. Dave and Chris are two blokes who genuinely enjoy what they do and take pride in every thing that leaves the factory and remain at hand from the point of order onwards which a lot of "I've got your money so see you later" cuemakers could take a few pointers from.

I pestered Dave for well over a month to get my cue through during a busy point of the year with Xmas just round the corner and they delivered the cue on time and exactly to spec. In what's turning out to be usual fashion for me, I needed at least two lots of alterations made to find out what spec I needed rather than guessed at. As you can imagine, a lot of emails, phone calls, getting Dave and Chris to stay late yet not one grumble from either of them as their main interest was seeing me happy with their work.

I now have a truly one off cue, at a ridiculously reasonable price and the knowledge that the after sales support will be there for years to come. Oh and Chris does make a great cup of tea I'll give you that.

One of Shropshire's and the cuemaking world's real gems . .

                Nice cues.
It is easier to manage a smaller output because one can spend as much time as is needed on each cue and also get to talk to the customers in details to try and understand their needs and wants and to spend more time in selecting the proper material for each and every cue..
But a bigger company with a big output can make more money and get their cues out in the hands of more customers so they can have better exposure quickly. With more money made they can buy more machines and hire more people and make more cues quicker--may be also give some out for free to pros for more exposure and promotion and get more orders back in return--which can help to generate more income.
With a smaller company the growth may be much slower. The reputation of a smaller company might be more local, and the waiting time is also much longer. It is hard for a one to two man shop to make tones of cues if they want their output to be above a high standard. But a smaller shop also is cheaper to run and is easier to manage. The cue maker also get to speak to and know his customers personally and it is a very satisfying feeling to have some customers coming back again and again to order cues for themselves and their friends I think.

                      Deepscrew,

Very, very nice looking cue. Thanks for this thread and info about Mastercraft. I went onto their website for the first time and was quite impressed with their work.
The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Deepscrew, glad you liked your experience with Mastercraft and the final product - it does look cracking, let's hope it plays well for you as well.
My friend who got a Mastercraft earlier this year is still loving playing with his cue, so I wish you have the same
