  • machine spliced?

Have never liked machine spliced cues as thought they looked cheap.
That said I have just picked up this old cue, no ferrel 11mm tip 16 1/2 oz, and it doesn't have the usual square cut at the base of the splice, is this definitely machine spliced, and can any one advise what it's worth?

Yes machine spliced and if it was straight and not whippy you might get £30 tops for it.. if not then not a lot.

Thanks guys, its lovely and straight and the splicing on it is superb, bought it off ebay with the intention of getting it lengthened as want to try a longer cue, but didn't want to go messing with it if it was worth anything, might still sell it as it seems a shame to start hacking away at such a lovely cue.

It looks like an older machine spliced cue. It's the newer ones that have the flat bit in the ash splice. Older cues seem to have sharp "points" top and bottom.
Hand spliced cues are a preferred cue by the majority of professionals, but whatever works for a player is best, whether it's machine spliced or hand spliced. Mike wooldridges website even states a good machine spliced cue is better than bad hand spliced cue. Even though they do, looks shouldn't play that big a roll in buying a cue.
Regarding getting it lengthened, that is your choice. It probably isn't worth a lot of money, so it might be worth it to try a longer cue. If it doesn't work for you, you wont lose too much.
If you want to play the pink, but you're hampered by the red, you could always try to play the brown!
