  • Question about Mark Allens cue

Does anybody know what is that "plug" that Mark takes off from the buttjoint of hes cue when using extencions? I noticed some siver coloured thing in the butt end of his cue today when watching the first session of the uk final. Was i tripping or what... Has anybody else noticed that? Is it just some protection for the joint and is it commonly used in snooker cues? i have never seen those in any cues before.

I (or rather, my boyfriend) was wondering the same, so no, you're not tripping.

Seems it also has the effect of him holding his cue a bit looser.

Its probably used to protect the bottom of the cue. Reallistically you wouldn't really damage the SD joint even if you bang the cue on the floor on a regular basis but some players like to have a plug inserted to protect it and this is probably the reason Allen has it on his cue.

Of course there is a slight possibility that it could be used to add weight to the cue.

Nice to hear that Mikeadyla .. not tripping too much

cueman: Weight thing sounds interesting idea. Could solve someones "cue problem".> good shaft but bp too forward and too light.

        thanks a lot for replys

cueman is spot on i would think, a standard joint protector is designed in a way that doesn't add weight or alter balance etc etc Aeon years ago used to do a screw in weight that looks the same as Marks joint protector when screwed in but actually added about 1oz in weight, don't really see it done today.......it was a good idea & ahead of its time in my opinion.

thanks for the pics. This protector makes sense in that kind of butt joint where the "face" of the joint could get scratched.
Thanks everyone. Now i can sleep at night and not to think about mark allens butt and all :P

There was something about it on the beeb coverage where they showed it in the end of the cue, but I only caught the end of it so didn't find out what it was or what it was for?!!

one of the commentators said it was engraved with a pic of a pistol, not 100% but im sure they said its to protect the butt

Here is a close up picture of the product you are wondering about. It is part of a new range of cue gems that Mark uses. This one is bespoke and was specifically designed for Mark being known as The Pistol.

Mark was also using a gold chalk holder designed and made by the same company. Pics of other products in the range and more information can be found in this months Snookered Magazine on pages 46 and 47.

Hope that helps answer the questions!

                              Many thanks,

                              Sarah
