Cue Tips Question

Hi

I'vt had my 2 piece pot black cue for about 10 years and I never bothered replacing the tip until yesterday as I noticed that it had become hard and I wasn't getting as much spin as I thought I should be. So I put on a new elkmaster yesterday, with a drop of superglue gel in the middle, hit it off the ceiling by accident and it came straight off! Should I have put glue all over the top of the cue, not just in the middle?

It was 3 I bought in riley packaging. Before it came off it performed perfectly with plenty of spin and a great feel off it. The tip is 10mm on a 9.5mm ferrule. I always had it sitting flush with the ferrule before but I really like the overhanging look.

So then I put it back on with evo-stick last night. I didn't bother to make sure the surface was flat, so it isn't sitting quite level. I don't like it off level, but does this really matter? Has anybody any experience with superglue gell or evo stick putting on new tips?

One final question, I bought 3 9mm blue diamond tips instead of 10mm by accident, can they still be put on a 9.5mm ferrule or would they be too small? They also were in Riley packaging.

I use Superglue gel, never used Evostick.
A tip smaller than the ferrule will not look good and also may allow the edge of the ferrule to hit the cue ball, 1) ruining the shot and 2) probably chip the ball.

Quite a few players like the mushroom-tip look, I personally like a thickish tip, flush to the ferrule.
One point though, very important, always ensure the surface of the cue-shaft and ferrule are clean of old glue and old tip, and also that the bottom of the new tip is nicely rubbed down to remove any manufacturing surface or dirt and to aid bonding.

I dont think it matters if the put a blob of glue in the middle or smear a thin layer until it covers it all . Whatever method you should see a little excess of glue right around the tip when pressure is applied . I think a lot of tips become loose because the glue has not covered the whole area which leaves a tiny area of the tip which has not stuck . On the other hand you dont want to overdo it and make a mess .

Well guess what? It came off for the second time, evo stik is definitely not suitable Dean! Thanks very much for the help.

DeanH: I looked at the Mike Wooldridge Re-tipping animation right before I did it but I guess I just didn't watch closely enough and therefore didn't do it correctly. I was correct the first time using the superglue gel then. I'll see if I can get the blue diamond 9mm tips exchanged for a pack of three 10mm ones, technically they aren't fit for purpose, so that shouldn't be a problem! I love the mushroom style tip! I'll make sure that both surfaces are flat before I attempt it again.

hotpot: The next time I try it with a new tip tomorrow I'll make use super glue gel, make sure both surfaces are flat and make sure that I can see excess glue at the side when I apply pressure, but I'll try not to overdo it.

I use evostick. It seems to work fine. On the rack cues some have "proper" tips but for the ones that get used a lot I just slip a plastic end over with a tip ready on it. They are good enough for that purpose.

Thanks. Maybe it just didn't stay on because neither surface was flat. I'm going to try it again with super glue gel later on today. I'll report back.

Regardless of the bonding material not having clean, flat surfaces was probably the main problem

3rd time lucky! I used araldrite precision glue. Just I case you've never heard of it, it's a two part epoxy glue, you mix both parts together and apply to both surfaces.

I used a new tip out of my three pack of elk master, so that surface was smooth. I then sanded the top of the cue smooth, applied the glue and stuck it! Simple! The glue came out of the side when I applied pressure like you said it should! Though I forgot to sand down the bottom of the tip so it is smooth like Mike W says in his re-tipping guide. Does it matter?

I then played a frame against my dad on my 8 by 4 table and beat him by a fine margin! 46-39. It came down to the black! I just need to get used to the great spin and feel to get my confidence back, I didn't play to my normal standard.

I sanded the tip down, in an outwards motion only. It's now a perfect dome shaped mushroom tip!

Thanks so much, your tips really helped and I would reccomend Araldrite Precision glue for re-tipping. It is perfect and is very strong.
