  • TLC to Cue

    Hey Guys,

Im new to the forum and was wondering if someone could help me, i found an old 3/4 cue of mine up the loft and was looking a bit worst for wear, really sticky, green patches on it etc so i lightly sanded it well roughly sanded it which was not a very good idea as its very smooth but has no protection to it, I was told by someone at my club to use Raw Linseed oil??? if i was to use this how would i apply and how many coats etc? Thanks in advance

Yes, raw linseed oil will do it a treat, as mentioned do a search and you will find loads.
Basically, very little at each time.
Before though, get some very fine grade paper, 2000 or 3000 (cheap off ebay) and get the surface a smooth as you can before oiling. You can also do a rub between coats, if the wood is very dry the grain could raise a bit as it soaks the oil.
Between coats allow the oil to be touch dry but if it is very dry this could only be a matter of hours.
I did a friend's cue not that long ago, which he found in the back of an old cupboard, as you say it was dirty and dry. It came up a treat.
Just don't put too much RLO on for each coat and also there will be a time when to stop applying any more - if in doubt -don't
          As mentioned - any piccies?

If it is an ash cue you may want to fill and seal the grains first before you oil it.

You can try different fillers to see which one works for you, or spend a bit and get a cue doctor to do it. The job is not that expensive.

Remember to get RAW linseed oil not boiled linseed oil. It has been commented that boiled linseed oil has artificial dryers in it that can cause problems to the cue woods. Not sure how true this is but just to be sure get raw
