  • Which timber to splice onto Cocobolo?

I'm looking to get a cue made for myself, but i'm unsure as to which timber I want for the splices. I have chosen Cocobolo for the main timber. I originally wanted Bocote for the 4 lower splices. However the cue maker i'm having carry out the work doesn't have any. They said they can get it if i want it, but I wouldn't want to make their work more difficult.

Any suggestions from you guys would be very welcome.

I was thinking perhaps Curly Maple or Curly Burl. I like timber with a nice prominent grain/pattern. Ideally i would like a lighter wood than the Cocobolo.

I like the sound of the curly maple to be honest! You could always think about other maples like birdseye maple :snooker:

Curly Maple was my second favourite behind Bocote. But I don't know that many cue making woods, so it's always nice to have feedback from others.

I'm not too keen on the Birdseye Maple. I've only ever seen one or two pieces that I liked the look of.

Amboyna Burl and Bethlehem Olive Wood are another two timber's I really like. However i don't know of any cue makers who use Bethlehem Olive Wood. Amboyna Burl I know is used frequently.

Trevor White is the cue maker I have approached to make this for me. I miss my old one that had a premature death. Unfortunately the shaft got snapped in two about 3 inches from the ferrule. A car door got slammed shut with the cue half in half out the car. I'm sure you can all imagine how gutted I was.

This was before I knew that I could have had it re-ferruled and respliced to give the length back.

I just love thuya burr , either a single or four splices with no veneers .

I have a Robin cue which is full cocobolo butt with a cocobolo front splice and thick maple veneer. I think this looks good. Mine is orange cocobolo butt with red cocobolo front splice, I think this may look better the other way round?

I think a nice piece of tulipwood or kingwood with or without thick maple veneer would also look good.

PS, you say Trevor offered to get bocote in for you. If that is what you want, take him up on it. I doubt its that much trouble for him (unless its unavailable or summit).

When you say before you knew about referruling and resplicing? Did you threw it away? ouch if you did.

It was indeed. In the hands of a lucky forum member now but it had to go.

I did indeed throw the damaged cue away. But I did have a great deal from the chap I bought it from.so I didn't lose out on an awful lot of money.

I've got some lovely olivewood. It doesn't have to be "Bethlehem" olivewood. Standard olivewood is beautiful. Really good grain showing, and would contrast very well against the deep red/brown of the cocobolo.
The first cue on the "post pics of your cue" thread has an olivewood splice which would look good.
If you want to play the pink, but you're hampered by the red, you could always try to play the brown!

Do you have any exceptional pieces Mike. I'm looking for something with a very prominent grain. I'm awfully fussy with my cues.
