  • Ye Olde Ash Cue

So, I am in a local snooker club and a guy I havent seen for many years finishes his snooker game and comes to the bar and orders a drink. He puts his cue at the end of the bar and I glanced at it and did a double take when I saw the badge..........Ye Olde Ash!! I asked if I could have a look at the cue and he said ok so I picked it up and saw with dismay that it had a centre joint. The actual cue is absolutely original (apart from the joint) and is full length and I would guess 10mm to 11mm and the grain is dead straight. I told him that if it didnt have the centre join then it could be worth over £1000 and he said 'I got fed up with catching the tip of the cue on the inside of my car so about 20 years ago had the centre joint put in'.
The badge has 'London' on it. Its the very first original Ye Olde Ash cue that I have ever held

Nice story, and i bet there are lots of older players who have really valuable cues but don't really realise it. Ive only started playing in local leagues for the past couple of years so when i go to the away matches i'm always trying to see who's playing with what lol.
It was thro one of these older players that i managed to get hold of mine.

Tired of getting the tip caught in the car so just chop it in half, priceless!!! LOL

                    Thanks for the story.

We should be glad at least he did not also change to a screw-on tip because he was tired of changing tips.

Many years ago (1970s!!) there was an old guy who played snooker every evening on the same table in our club. One day he brought in a brand new cue, still wrapped in a polythene cover. His grandkids had bought him it for his 70th birthday but he preferred his old cue that he had used all his life. Me and a mate asked to have a look at his new cue an we took it out of its cover and I can still remember holding a brand new Eureka cue!! We both pestered the guy to sell us the new cue that he didnt want but of course he told us that as it was a present he would have to keep it.
I now play snooker in our local league and always look at cues that visiting teams use and although most of the younger players use modern cues (Master, GBL, Craftsman etc) the majority of the older players still use old antique cues of which many are centre joined which was a common 'modification' back in the late 70s, early 80s!! Quite a few of the top amateurs in our league, those capable of century breaks, use old one piece machine spliced cues that wouldnt sell on ebay for more than £40 or £50 quid but those cues are just as good as some of the ridiculously priced Parris cues on ebay that are put up for sale for £500+.
After years of spending fortunes on cues I am now of the opinion that any good player can play with almost any cue as long as it has a decent tip on it. The tip is FAR more important that the cue. If a snooker player is capable of a century break then his technique is excellent and he can play with any cue to a high standard. One of my best mates back in the 70s was Dave Martin who turned professional. He used to use a Burwat Champion cue that he had used all his life and one day he had a huge argument with his (then) wife and overnight she got his cue and smashed it into pieces. At that time Dave played in the Middlesborough league as well as our local league and the next night he went to the Mboro club and looked at all the rack cues and picked up an old machine spliced cue that most people wouldnt look twice at and used that cue for his match and that night knocked in the very first ever century break in that league. I was there so know for a fact that this is a true story. Dave then turned pro with that cue and used it until he got Nick Reaney (Sheriden Cues) to make him a new cue.

A mate of mine had one, not sure which edition, and offered it to me for $700. Really wish I'd taken it. The ash was beautiful and it hit so well...

The cue that I saw was badged 'London' which meant that is wasn't one of the original first edition 'Newcastle' badged cues which I believe were made with the original reclaimed old ash which was red coloured. I didn't hit any balls with it but the cue was in amazingly good condition for a cue that must be around 50 years old.

I recall a local player who was about 18 at the time, he made a 141 break in an Amateur competition and then realised he had picked up someone else's cue!! He still plays now t a high standard with a machine spliced Horace lindrum cue.
                              Makes yer sick eh.
