  • Try before you buy in Scotland?

Hi, im really new to the forum, although ive been lurking in the shadows trying to read whatever snippets i can without registering!

Anyway, i looking for a cue. I have roughly £200 to spend. I've saw some other threads similar to this and got some good ideas for a cue, and would order one, but i would just like to double check with some fellow scottish members. For the past 6 months i've been doing crazy google searchs looking for cue shops around the lanarkshire area, but cant find any. I feel i'm really picky with a cue, my current cue i have is just a cheapish one from Rileys i bought a year and a half ago ( about £50 all in with case ). It's ok, but while i was re-tipping it the other day i found the ferrule and shaft arent even, and obviously being my first cue and introducing me to the game its got some faults with it ( i.e leaving it upright and someone drops it on the pub floor! ) .. It's got some nicks out the butt and im just kind of beginning to feel it's time to mvoe onto a better cue.

The reason im making this thread is because i feel like im really picky with them, everyone in my pool team has their own cues, and when i use them, sometimes i find their really butt heavy, which i dont really like! I dont know if it's because my cue has a 1/2 joint it maybe add's a bit of weight to the shaft, but i like the way the weight is distributed, so it's really putting me off buyin a cue, because it will absolutly break my heart if i find the weight isnt right and feel i have to justify buying it by playing with it!

So im wondering if there are any "try before you buy" shops in the area?
From what i know, im looking for: Ash shaft, 9-9.5mm tip, ebony butt ( maybe with a nice splice & veneer ) and about 18oz .. but like i said, ive played with cues that are the same weight but really heavy at the butt and i dont feel i get the right contact with the cue ball

Was considering getting a MW .. but to be honest, its maybe just a tad outside my price range for what il be using it for. I dont play any snooker league, but currently play in 2 english pool leagues, and play snooker whenever im not playing pool! .. I've only started playing within the past 6 months, and dont think i should be buying a £200+ cue purely because i think il get better, but i would just like an upgrade if you will, and better craftmanship than the cue i currently have!

Maybe still a bit more searching to do, but cue's im really liking the look of are:
    Master PB4
    Professional Cue M5
    Phoenix master cue #2
    Phoenix Unity #16
And also the Mastercraft Eclipse(possibly my favorite) & Conquest

You can probably see its the same sort of design im going for, and tbh they are all kind of similar spec, but can anyone shed any light on these cues or is it just a matter of emailing and discussing it with them? Main sort of thing im looking for is "is it butt heavy or more evenly distributed?" .. and if anywhere does these cues in Scotland whereabouts!? Helpp!

ADR is in Perthshire. Not very close to Lanarkshire mate! Would guess at 2 hour drive.
Steve Would take up The Doctors offer if I was you. There's really not much choice for "try before you buy" places in Scotland. Me and a few other "Jock" Forum Members have the same problem as you and have "bought blind" via the internet. Its trial and error and ends up expensive. We've all bought several cues only to find out they're not really what we're after. The problem of course is not restricted to Scots folk. If you're not lucky enough to live close to Craftsman Cues or Greenbeize etc you have to buy blind.
There's a couple of other Scottish guys on The Forum who might be near you. Do a search on "Exquisite Cues" or "Macues" and you'll find them.
PS I've got a Mastercraft Eclipse. Nice cue but didn't like the taper. Shaft a bit thick.
PPS Raymo147 has beat me to it!! Hope you can help this guy mate.

There is an old thread dated 28 March 2010 entitled Andrew Gibbs Cue ,it is in the " for sale " section, just use search facility, that it would be worth your while reading. On 21st Jan 2012 Andy Gibbs posted ( post no 47) that he " may " be taking delivery of some cues ,by way of apology from the Far East.Andy Gibbs made Graham Dotts cue ( Graham played 8 ball as well as snooker),Michaela Tabbs cue ,Scottish International Pool player and cues for most of the Scottish Ladies team as well as numerous other pool cues.If anyone knows pool cues ,it will be Andy and while these cues are not made by Andy,if any of them are any good ,he could tell you.The iceing on the cake,as far as you are concerned,is that Andy was / is from Larkhall , S.Lanarkshire ,if my memory serves me right. You need to increase your post count (needs to be above 10) to PM Andy , but it might be worth your while to do so.Hope this helps, apologies to Andy for ruining your " quiet retirement ".

Centre jointed cues are more " forward biased" in general ,compared to 3/4 cue, which I suspect is what your team mates are using.Their cues will feel butt heavy but then so can a narrow, dense butt in comparison to a wide ,less dense butt e.g. ebony, slim, dense butt will feel heavier than wider rosewood butt. You need to find the balance point of your cue and see if you can get it replicated in your new cue.A centre joint cue may have a balance point for example of 18"-20" whereas a 3/4 might balance from 15"-17" ,rear biased would be below 15".Average 3/4 is about 16"-16.5" give or take.
