  • tapering question

just wondering if re tapering a cue can lead to it being more whippy?

my glover cue has got a thick taper and i am wanting it taken down a bit, the shaft is stiff.

would the shaft have more flex if i had it done?

Less wood, would to me, suggest it is likely to become more wippy....all depends how much you get taken off really and how high the new taper starts.

Not always the case. Send it to Trevor or someone who really understands tapering.
You can make the tip smaller and the front also slimmer but make the cue stiffer if the new taper is more conical.

I would suggest ask Trevor to handle it, he knows how to taper a shaft properly to give you waht you need.

Yep would leave it to the pros, i retapered an old cue years ago from a fairly stiff 9mm conical to a much longer slim taper 10mm after re-ferruling a cue left it much more whippy couldnt get on with it after that, rem you can take off wood but cant put it back on!

You know from reading what Trevor has written since I have joined this forum one thing that has really impressed me is his knowledge on tapering.

From what I have read, Trevor is someone who knows a lot about what part of the taper will make the cue do what and how to change the "hit" of the cue with certain adjustments.

Personally I love studying the taper and have done lots of experiments. I have found that it is possible to have a stiffer taper with a smaller tip than one with a bigger tip. But with some shafts it is very hard to achieve that because it is just too springy to begin with.

It is my honest belief that Trevor can make so many nice playing cues largely because he knows so much about the taper. He knows the whys and hows of cue performance in relationship to the taper.

I have no doubt you will learn so much taking your cue to Trevor to hear what he has to say. I wish I lived close to him as I would love to have the chance to do that.

yeap tapering is quite hard to judge how to keep the shaft stiffish.

the shaft on my cue is very stiff, so i am hoping tapering what alter it too much.
decided going to take down to craftsman cues as only down road from me.
the cue has a slim butt and thin shaft near tip but quite thick in the middle. so gonna have some wood taken off in middle. pretty hard to explain without seeing the cue, but never seen a cue tapered like it, hope the reason wasnt to get the cue stiff. as when i get cue back it might be like a fishing rod! lol
