  • Main visual differences between steamed pearwood and maple?

Can anyone clue me in on what to look for between pearwood and maple? On the lookout for a mannock, theres one on the bay at the mo, its listed as pearwood but to me looks more like maple. Are they visually very similar in terms of grain?

Found an old ebay ad with this pic, says pearwood in the listing but to me that looks more like maple:

That being said Mattys cues also seem to have a grain similar to this and i think theyre of the pearwood variety

Thats what i was thinking too going by other threads but suppose its hard to see from pictures. I thought the grain would be a telling factor, but apparently theyre similar.

I believe that Mannock's with a Maple shaft are relatively rare. I sold one a few years ago for £350, which at the time was a premium on the pearwood.

So whats peoples opinions of the cue in the OP? Think im gonna give tony glover a shout on it as he apparently worked on it at some point redoing the snakewood front splice.
