  • Cue Copy?

Hi, I play with a 3/4 Cue Craft cue and have done for years.

It's taken a fair bit of punsihment to be fair including one pretty severe dent that I filled with sawdust and some sort of resin (genuinely can't recall).

I'm reluctant to get a new cue as I hold this one so very dear to my heart but I feel the dented patch job may become too compromised in the not too distant future.

Anyway, don't want to sidetack the issue with my heartache so here it is:

If I give a top cuemaker my cue (I'm aware there's a few on here so feel free to plead for my business), could they make me a cue of identical dimensions?

I'm not talking close, I'm talking identical. I'm aware their cues will be superior to mine in terms of feel and quality but I'm only after the root dimensions. Length, weight, taper of the shaft.

Can I have an entirely new cue made with the same measurements?

what you are asking is very easy but the cue will still feel different.

Glover cues have a bench jig that can copy a cue exactly to within 000ths of an inch. However ADR is right , just because it is identical in taper and specs , it does not necessarily follow that it will play the same.Timber varies in grain pattern and density as well as flex , but you might be able to compensate if the ferrule, taper, weight, balance point and butt diameter is the same as your original.

I already alluded to this. I'm not a beginner, I'm fully aware that each cue plays differently. I'm merely concerned with the size and weight. Not the feel of striking a ball.

Thanks for the information, Golver cues will recieve my first call. Only ten miles up the A444 as it goes.

Another one who makes cues based on people bringing there old cue is wright cues.

It sounds like your current cue is your pride. Have you consulted professional advice about getting it repaired?

Dont forget you have a 3/4 cue so you dont have to change the butt, you can continue with same butt and feel you always had, just get a new shaft tapered exactly same as yours.

Again the shaft will hit different but can adapt to this as you say you pretty good. You could choose to have new joints also.

Any competent cue maker can do this but I somehow feel that you will always think your old cue is the best.
May be just get another cue craft with same weight and length if you want to experiment?

Agree with ADR that dimensions and spec alone will not guarantee that the cue will feel similar to your old cue when getting a cue custom made.

I would recommend travelling to Craftman Cues in Leeds or GreenBaize in Teesside if you can as they stock hundreds of quality hand made cues that you can try out 'til your hearts content and you will have a greater chance of finding a cue that feels very similar to the one you have already.

It might be a trek for some but I think worth it when looking for a new life soul mate

I go to Glovers quite regularly and one word of advice , phone first. Tony works very much on his own at the moment and often doesnt get in to the workshop much before 9.30am .He lives locally and if I remember rightly he had a telephone number posted in the window of the door.If you get there and he has had to go out/home just phone,he wont be far away. The comments from sootyvrs & jaffa have merit , a new shaft could be one option & if you fancy the journey a trip up to Craftsmans is always worth it.Simon and Dave very customer friendly and two tables ( snooker & pool) and whole racks of cues to try out , heaven.Piece of advice , it gets busy at weekends if you want to " try before you buy " go up in the week.Hope this helps.

Once more, I know I can't replicate the feel. Banging my head against the wall each time one of you fine folk mention it.

Thanks very much for the info on Glovers, I will call first.

I had not considered this, thanks. If a reasonable job can be done on it then I will get it repaired.

                  Thanks again guys.

Ok, here is the problem. As you can see it's not too severe. The fact that I notice it at all is not ideal though and if there is a solution whereby I cannot feel the seam of the filled dent in the cue. Then that would be a desirable outcome.

Is this something that could be rectified?

Thanks, can't help but feel a bit silly for thinking my cue was a potential write-off.

Guess that's why I'm not the expert!

                          Thanks again.

I am sure some pro players' cues might have been in much worst shape than yours but they hanged on to theirs. The feeling of your cue being the extension of your arm is so intangable it is not always easy to find another one like that again.
Your pictures are not very clear but I think it is just a matter of leveling the filler with the wood so it will feel flush and smooth again.

Is this something that cuemaker would be able to find the time for or would I be without my cue for some time?
