Mike Wooldridge - *NEW* 'BlackSpin' Ferrule System
What's different about these New tips compared to your supertips Mike? Also how resilient to scratching and wear are the new ferrules compared to brass?
When it comes to re-tipping with the new ferrule, do you have to be any more careful than normal not to cut or scratch the sides/top/edge of the ferrule? Its wont chip or cut easily?
no.
it is quite tough and will not chip or cut easily.
but, like brass, you still have to work carefully with a sharp blade.

tips - wait and see.
brass scratches very easily and is difficult to maintain a nice appearance.
'BlackSpin' will scratch if you try to scratch it, like any material, but it is pretty tough and hard wearing.
in normal use it will retain it's 'clean & tidy' look indefinitely.
As you know i have also been experimenting with other materials. Just wondered if this was of plastic nature or metal.
Regarding the delrin ferrule. After asking what He wanted, Terry decided to go with the delrin ferrule and so far so good(it has a very deflection and exeptional feel).
I used an epoxy resin to glue it and tip on.
I am also trying some other materials.
Stainless steel and other plastics with carbon filled and glass filled properties.

can't say, proprietary information.
i experimented with delrin, and many others, in the late 80's/90's before ending up sticking with tried and trusted brass.
i found an old experimental shaft in the workshop recently which made me revisit a 'concept' i had from way back then. it evolved very quickly this time cos i stumbled upon the right 'ingredients'.
Mike the new ferrules look class m8. I am.always keen to hear what you think about these subjects as your knowledge is way beyond that of mine. Was just hoping to get some ideas so not to go down the wrong route(like you said with delrin, although I have had good experience with it I doubt I would continue to use it due to what you and Arin said).
Keep up the good work and any wee idea you could throw my way would be very welcome indeed.
probably not, apart from if you have a longer than usual ferrule
but at worst, no more than a couple of mm. just the difference between the length of the original brass ferrule and the 'BlackSpin' ferrule.
Mike:
Couple of questions (to stress test your design innovation, not question it):
[1] Say someone does not like the experience of going black, can a standard brass ferrule then be retro fitted to the cue? Have you ever tried at all? Response to this cannot be that everybody will like to go black and nobody will want to go back (that would be the answer to another question!) ;-)
[2] If so, thinking about what needs to happen inside of the cue to first fit the black spin ferrule, would it then alter the cue length more than just a couple of mm?
[3] What about the tip size? Could it be altered in any way (in particular because of the conical taper)?

Keep up the great work!
1) Yes. But I would not recommend it. It is missing the point. The system works best as a whole. I would add that I do strongly believe once people try black, they will not go back to brass.
2) You only lose length if you have an unusually long ferrule. At most that will be no more than 2-3mm
3) The tip size can be adjusted as easily as any other cue, apart from making it ridiculously small. Personally, I choose not to do less than 8.5mm, but I am often asked to go to 8mm.
8mm-10mm covers all that is needed and easily covers 99.9% of snooker/pool players so there is no issue whatsoever. You could, in fact, go smaller but I will not do it out of principle.

Mike two questions.
1. Can I use all the usual glues when changing tips ?
2. What sort of turn around time to retro fit, at this stage ?
" Cues are like girlfriends, once they become an EX I don't want them hanging around ".
