  • Tapered ferrule

I have noticed that some cues have a somewhat tapered ferrule sometimes a fraction longer than standard is there any reason for this.

I've replaced a number of tapered ferrules, although I have not noticed them to be any longer than normal.
The majority I've seen/done are on english pool cues where they required a smaller tip size. Rather than taper the shaft you can taper just the ferrule. Good if you want to then go back to a larger tip.

Mine has sort of very slight shoulders not through over use of wire wool. it was that way on purchase.
