    refinishing cue

    I'd looking to refinish my cue. Not really going to do much to the shaft but want to refinish the butt piece with some sort of shiny finish. I think the current finish is just some sort of cue oil. any suggestions? Including what type of sanding needed, etc.

    is it plain ebony or other exotic woods? Some woods you have to be really careful with such as burl, dont really want to be sanding that unless you know what your doing.

    If cue is oil finished then you could sand with about 1000 grit, then upto 1200 - 1500+ wouldnt go any coarser unless the finish is bad/rough etc, then finish with a few coats of linseed oil (maybe thinned with turpentine) buffing really well inbetween coats, then finish with a light coat of cue wax if you want a more glossy appearance. (craftsmans wax is good), leave for half hour or so and buff really well. Repeat this 2/3 times can give a really nice smooth glossy finish. The best way to build up a good finish is fine coats and buff really well inbetween helping the finish to cure.

    If cue is varnished then need to start coarser to get rid of the varnished finish.

    Sometimes applying oil/wax can raise the grain slightly as it penetrates the wood and may need a light sand between coats to smooth off again.

      you can get like washing up scourers green is rough white is very fine ,you prob dont need any sanding but if you do use very fine as stejohn said and oil

        It is mainly two ebony splices with burl splice between them. I'm not sure what the maker used to finish but not glossy enough IMHO. I guess I'll email him to see what the original finish was. Thanks for the replies so far and in advance to those who want to throw in their opinions as well.

          Also I googled "craftsmanship wax" no actual product hits came back. Is that just a wax wood polish or would it be some special brand only available in the UK?

            Its craftsman cues, cue wax, you can buy it on ebay or from their website www.craftsmancues.com
