  • Fitting leather pad!

Just thought I'd put this to you all!
I've been fitting leather pads to cues to finish cues
for people who don't like the base joint!
    Really enjoying it actually!
Makes me think of my old hunts and Osborne cues!
I was never a fan of the mini-butts and extension for it!
I was always a butt jointed plain ebony man with the solid
    3 quarter extension!
But seems these days everyone wants the base joint mini butt thing!
Got to the stage Osborne no longer even fits leather pads!
    What's your thoughts?

Took me ages to get a butt joint put on my cue, i was more concerned about the wood splitting if i bumped the cue off the floor, something that obviously isnt really an issue with a leather pad. That being said since ive had the butt joint damaging it really isnt much of an issue as the places i play generally have carpet tiles on the floor. Back a few years and it was a harder type of floor they had which made me more wary about getting it done.

Yeah I just found it more comfortable to have a three quarter
extension and a solid one! Bit like Matt Stevens style!
As a player I just found the mini butt added far too much weight!
But seems us cue makers have to sell a cue with base joint in around
      90% of our cues!
The base joint isn't something Hendry ever worried about in his day!
It was the big plastic push on everyone used or before that the half butt!
Imagine trying a deep screw with them lol lol

Much prefer a leather butt pad myself.

Never bothered me having sd joint either, always reach for the fishing tackle sort of keeps the old school snooker habits alive and well in the modern game.....lol there never usually straight and its a plus if they have a tip on but all part of the fun i suppose.....

The leather butt pad is ok, but not essential look at all the old/antique cues with just a butt plug that still look fine today after all those years of use. The soild wooden extension attaching to a 3/4 joint isn't bad though as it feel lighter overall when your using it, didn't like the push on extension much as it doesn't fit in most cue cases, the sd is a good idea no doubt about that, and many wouldn't be without them horses for courses though.

So the main message must be don't slam the cue on the floor and you can't go wrong whatever it is.........;-)

I am a leather pad fan too. Ordered my hunt&osberne green plates with no joint at the end and my mike mw08 with burr cap.
Feels more confrontble with round butt.

I like them too. I think GBL and Tony Wilshaw have an s.d joint inserted through a leather pad for some of their cues and it's a great look.
                  Tear up that manure-fed astroturf!
