My Cue Is F****d??

Hi guys,

i bought a bran new cue about 2 weeks ago, and whenever i hit the ball at a medium pace it is really high pitched like those ****ty pub cues you borrow and they are like 2 pounds. I showed a professional coach and he said it was probally the varnish they put on the tips in factorys so he changed the tip, and it seemed fine for a few days and then tonight i went to play and i noticed it badly?? i think i just buy a new cue? Help is apreciated.

Most of the time when you hear that sound it's because the screw joint is a little loose, just make sure it's nice and tight, you can't really over do it. Since it's reoccuring though, it could well be a loose tip. Just gently try to push it up with your thumb and if it's not properly stuck all the way round that's your problem.

Could also be a loosely fitted joint, ferrule, or, depending on the sound and type of cue possibly even a loose weight or split. Personally I'd bet it's the tip. Even a pro coach might not get it on nicely every time. Can't really believe he blamed the sound on 'tip varnish' though .

well the thing is when its not screwed together and i hit a ball, it sounds and feels fine, thats why i am thinking its the joint or the other peiece. What do you rekon?

Most likely it's your ferrule. It's probably loose or loosened. I had that with my old (cheapo) cue and it only went away after replacing the brass ferrule with a vinyl one (yuck!). This wasn't the first time I saw a brass ferrule go loose on a cheap cue. That's why I bought a more expensive cue as my second one, precisely to avoid problems such as this.

Good luck and look into your ferrule installation. More than likely it's the source of your problems. Try twisting it with your fingers, if you can move it around even a little bit that's really bad! In my opinion a cue that had a ferrule go loose is good for nothing and the only way to prolong its life is to put a vinyl ferrule on it. Once brass goes loose no amount of gluing will sort it out.

Well the thing is, how could it be the ferrul when it doesnt make that sound when its not screwed together, i really dont know what to do have any ideas? sell it?

See if you can take it back from where you got it?

Explain to them the issue, hopefully they have a table there so you can show them the problem.

it is nearly always the ferrule even if the sound appears to be from the joint - local cue doctor should be able to sort that in a few mninutes, whoever said varnish on tip is a guy to stay away from in future.

Do you think they would do like a part exchange? as i would like a new cue, even though i bought it a couple weeks ago. Like they take it back then take some money off the new cue?

I would definitely say your ferrule is split, take to your nearest cue doc, it's an easily fixed problem. And agreeing with ADR147, stay well away from that "professional" coach who said something about varnish and tip!!! Whats your local area mate?

Ferrules tend not to split unless the wall thickness is scarily thin, and, even if they do split, don't really tend to give an audible sign of it.
The problem is more than likely due to the ferrule becoming slightly slack or the joint not being solid in the shaft or butt. One other possibility is that any weight which 'might' be in the cue could be loose, but that is less likely.
A good cue specialist will be able to tell you exactly in about five seconds what it is, and, will definitely be able to rectify it for not too much cash I'd bet.
