  • hendrys cue after it got broken

Came across this on youtube and it shows his original cue after the repair job, looks really odd as it just seems to have more splices holding the shaft together. The butt end you can see has a large chunk out of it as well near the top, i always though they got it playable again but it never felt the same, this seems to suggest otherwise with the state the butt is in.

You see him putting it into a trophy case around 8:30 ish.

Cue looks proper buggered. Shame really as that was the point of his decline. Difficult to say whether it was coincidence or cause.

And heres an article i found when it got broken:

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2003...r.cliveeverton

According to that only the bottom 15 inches had broken off and ths shaft was intact and thats a quote from the guy who was fixing the cue (Lawrie Annandale). So why is it said the cue was broken in multiple pieces, and if the shaft was intact why all these numerous splices patching it together? If it was the bottom 15 inches, fixing it to have a joint at that point would be relatively simple.

      Really odd.

Nice find Narl saw this on final day was wonderin when someone would post it. Yeah Lawrie was the scottish ref who always did Stephens tips during the golden years so he should know where it was broken. By the looks of that the shaft looks to be intact though hes holding the broken butt section in one hand and the cue seems to have been jointed just below the tips of the ebony splices, looks like the new butt section has come from an old cue with a joint placed just above its splices, weird lookin if you ask me. Its really a wonder that jp or some of the other cue doctors could not have repaired this fairly easily considering it looks to be only the butt snapped?

His cue got broken in 2003 and he was already in decline by then and the game was getting taking over by the likes of O'Sullivan, Higgins, Williams, Hunter & co.

There appears to be 2 sets of splices on the shaft and both appear to be machine spliced for whatever reason.

I'm a firm believer in that the shaft is what makes a cue. weight and balance can be played around with but the shaft is what it is. if the shaft was ok maybe he gave up on the cue too easily.

It was a 1 piece cue so the shaft runs all the way from tip to butt, so the shaft was in effect broken 15in from the bottom of the cue.

Just a guess, but perhaps it was worse than a new cue because it looked like his old one but felt like a different cue.

Yeah just had a look again, the lower machine splices seem to be the lower section of a different cue entirely that has been jointed and added to his busted shaft. Looking again at the tips of splices above this joint there seems to be a mix of a couple of sharp pointed machine spliced tips but as he rotates it while putting it in the trophy case the next splice tips seem to be hand spliced tips just like the original ebony ones? Does really look like a mystery repair job, tho id have to agree 100% with poona that his game was already a couple of years on the slide at this stage. Id also side with Gerrys point that the shaft goes staight to the end in a one piece so maybe the feeling was gone, tho having looked at that mishmash of a repair hed of been lucky to get near the original feel of his cue again!

Sorry i meant to say id agree with Toodark (not Poona) in that id also agree that he was already well in decline at this point, bustin his cue was the last thing he needed though, pity.
