The last alteration, where the new splices were done, was simply to provide a slightly larger ferrule and a slightly thicker butt, which was all easy enough, and done without any problem. The issue here was that instead of making it 57.25" long finished, I finished it and sent it back at 57.75" long, which was half an inch over what it should have been. This was as much a surprise to me as it was to John, and I just couldn't understand how it had happened. anyway, I must have made some mistake using the tape on it and marked it in the wrong place. This is an extremely rare occurence, but it was done. The big problem was that he was due to play at the end of the week, and so he brought it down to me to have this adjustment made to bring it back to 57.25" long. The cue length was to be reduced from the butt end, although in doing that by just trimming it, it would have meant that the bottom of the cue was cutting through the name badge at the base, which couldn't happen. So, the small ebony splice was added, the butt trimmed to length, and new badge fitted.

This is why it looks this way now, and to be truthful, it looks great in reality.

So, this was MY ERROR, and is not due to any messing with the cue unnecessarily. I had no reason to post this at all, but thought it might be of interest.
Nice honest response, I think this is why so many ppl hold you in such high regard. I'm am surprised at the length even at 57.25 as it was always said that John played with a 56 inch cue. Any chance of posting the full spec?
      Thanks cazmac

Full spec was posted a few pages back with the altered cocbolo pics. Suprised people were thinking it was John messing with the cue when i stated in the pics it was an error that caused the cue to need a bit more work done to it (well maybe not all that suprised but still ).

            • I think the extra ebony splice looks great...... Really brings the cocbolo splices!!

Really interesting bits of information, thank you Trevor for the sharing.

Can't help but ask, can you share what is the reason if any for Higgins to request for such a unique way to make the flat of the butt so long?

                • Just wondering trev1 - has anyone ordered a cue similiar to Higgins cue be made to the new design?

To be honest, I really like the earlier version.

                  Still, each to their own.

                  Keep making those fantastic cues!

I am currently waiting for a TW (with snakewood) that I bought from ADR147.

Its currently with Trevor being reworked to the above spec and the nice looking cocobolo got the axe, pics to follow hopefully.
Hi Narl, did you not get the balance point? and did John share his thoughts with Trevor on why he likes to play with the cue grain going backwards. I have a theory that its to do with the shaft flex???

                    • @ Montrealer..... A cue made to this design would cost £430.

@ Cazmac......Spec is 57.25" long, ferrule 9.8mm butt 30mm, weight at 17.5oz's balances at approx 17.5". The shape of the back of the cue is very specific and is how it was requested. It does have a longer flat yes. The shaft grain thing is just what he likes to see, and has nothing to do with the stiffness of the cue. In fact, grain direction has nothing to do with the stiffness of any cue, and is not a much of a factor in determining the rigidity of a piece of wood.

@ Renniwevarb....... As posted above, though the very back of the cue is also shaped rather sharply, and is not rounded much at all. This is just how he likes it to be, and has little to do with the feel of it as he never holds the cue here. It's as it is with many players, some details are requested even though they have little or no effect on what the player "actually" feels, but it satifies their mind that things are as they like them to be.

Informative response really. If you could provide more cues to rightcue in Hong Kong, I definitely would go and get one myself.
