  • To ferrule, or not to ferrule?

Have just re finished an old hand spliced cue, bit of a mystery cue, no badge and no ferrule, four splices of curly maple or burr wood, 11mm tip, still has it's original tip and wafer.
Would adding a ferrule, and possibly bringing the tip size down increase or decrease it's value?

I would say off the top of my head; don't ferrule. Besides, tip and wood is the best combination for shots, even MW says so, less deflection.

Think i'm going to have a go at fitting a ferrule, as value is probably only around £50 as is, and would probably struggle to sell it with an 11mm tip and no provinence?

Hi mate, I'm interested in this cue, but unferruled as I'd like to run the experiment I talked about on another thread, i.e. no ferrule = less throw than even blackspin/fibre etc. Is it dead-eye straight? What's the balance point? Do you know if the weight inside is a lug or screw? What is the butt diameter? The butt looks bent, is this just the photo? Does she play well?

              Cheers, PP.

butt is definitely straight, wouldn't say shaft was 100% straight, but easily fixed, plays well as is, which really surprised me with such a big tip
Balances at 16.5", 31mm butt have no idea how it's weighted, has wooden plug in bottom if that offers any clues?

Cheers for the reply mate. Think I'll have to pass due to it being light. Thanks anyway. Lovely looking cue it is though.

Hope its still as lovely as a 53" cue, which it could be by the time i've fitted a ferrule, got to learn some time though!

Fitted one of flames omin tips on it and took it for a spin before making my final descision, was shocked at how nice it felt, tips still far to big at 11mm as i usually play with 9.5mm, but am really tempted to buy another cue with no ferrule so i can make a proper comparison, have got my eye on an 8mm damaged cue i could just hack the end off.
If i go down this route do i need to treat the end of the cue in any way?

If you look to sell it, let me know mate, I would get it ferruled, reduce the weight a bit more an use it as a break cue...at he right price of course lol

Yeah, wouldn't last long as a break cue without a ferrule lol! It's for sale as is at the mo, will take some better pics this weekend and stick it on here and possibly fleabay. To be honest i haven't got a clue what to ask for it, i'm into it for roughly £60, feel free to Make me an offer?
