Can you post a piccie of the knife then?
Back to the OP, the contrast between the white and black grain is very pronounced, even taking into account camera flash, exposure, etc., and does not look like any Masur (or Karelian) Birch I have seen before, which have all been more golden colour with less contrast between the grain, etc.

Nice sgian-dudh, now that is what I see as Masur/Karelian Birch, a nice golden colour.
The cue of the OP, if it is Karelian Birch it must be a rare "albino" batch

as it ages it darkens.

yep appreciate that, I have noticed a slight darkening of the karelian birch on my Shelton which is 2years old, it was never that white in the first place, and is about the same golden colour of this JPU (which I believe is about 7 years old.)

see these, which are rubbish dark photos but you can see that the grain nowhere near as black as the OP, and is about the same colour (photo variants taken into account) as the JPU and the sgian-dudh

Well the cues back for sale with better pics, not as white as it was originally and more of a cream colour so looks like that birch wood after all.
