  • To get an sd joint or not...

At the minute im pretty happy with my cue, a first edition burwat champion, however the lack of extension socket is become very obvious the last lot of weeks, numerous times i needed an extension and had to resort to the hi tech fishing tackle of the 3/4 butt. Was considering a push on extension but theyre a pain to cart about since they won't fit in my case (and ive seen some cue butts get scratched up pretty bad when the velvet inside them peeled away exposing the butt to rough plastic).

I have 2 parris extensions (sd short butt and long telescoping) and was considering getting the joint put in the butt of my cue....but ive heard people say having this done can change the hit of the cue. Anyone any experience of this? Im not really fussed about it affecting resale value as i really clicked with this cue and don't see myself changing. Just worried about the possibility of it making the cue feel or hit slightly differently.

I think you would never notice the difference, are you a pro or something

      Not quite

Just the fact im happy with this cue but its becoming obvious lately i need extensions available for it. Just don't want to do anything that makes it feel different, or has the potential to.

It's worth it, although, when i had mine done, I didn't need it until about my 4th session playing..... You need it when you don't have it, don't need it when you finally get it.... but seriously, they're invaluable, just get it done!

Tell me about it, i originally had one on my 3/4 cue and it sat there for weeks before being needed Much prefer them to the fishing tackle on the table though.

I hear ya bro, in earlier days I'd just go for a different shot than use that stuff, even if it meant playing a completely ridiculous shot.... Have seriously only used that gear once, never again after that, i get my kill when folk crank em out....

You will not notice the difference at all in play but you will change the cue forever, it will no longer be an original burwat first edition, it will be like a rare vintage sports car with some modern *******ised modification.

However, if it will always be your playing cue, you don't care about altering it and you are losing important matches or money over those rare times the normal rest won't reach, you should get it done.

Does anyone notice that Ronnie seems to be getting rid of using the mini butt although his JP should support it ?

He would use the rest or long push on extension whenever out of reach.

I'm pretty sure o'sullivans cue has the sd socket, just seems to prefer using the push on extension.

Hopefully getting the cue sent away next week, going to have a macassar ebony minibutt made up and chamfored to match the cue butt and diamater. Only 16.36oz this cue according to my digi scales, be interesting to see what difference the sd socket makes.

Approx 3/8ths of an ounce, or half an ounce max if it's a Parris fitting.

That's rarely enough additional weight at the end of any cue to make noticeable difference to performance.

Not much difference at all then, assuming it can be fitted. Was talking to John today and he was saying about the badge plate and screws can cause issues getting the socket installed correctly since they obviously cut into the depth of the facesplice. Just have to see how it goes

Or he will just play the shot left handed..

Hi Narl, I've dredge up this old post to ask - were you pleased with the butt socket? Did it add much weight/affect your play?

                              Cheers
