No veneers used in this Jason. All splices bonded as solid section and hand planed to the thicknesses you see.

Trev, Surely the cue in the first opening thread, 1pc ash with Ebony, Maple & Amboyna, is made using veneers on each splice, bit like a conniseur?
Are we looking at the same cue?

Yes Jason, same cue we are looking at.

It's done by bonding solid sections, and planing them off to the thicknesses you see so they appear as veneers.

Do you never use veneers or just this one was "special"?

Yes, I do use veneers, but only the standard thinner 0.6mm type you see in numerous coloured varieties. All of the thicker banding in my cues is done by bonding solid section and planing to whatever thickness is required, pretty much like these cues were.

I could explain why I do it that way, but I won't go into it, apart from saying that to me, it offers greater control. (As long as you're decent using a plane that is)

This cue was done in the same way, but has cocobolo lower splices....

So my guess of the difference being that veneers are made of colored woods whereas splices out of natural ones was right after all...

Not really Guy no.

Veneers can be made in any timber. They are a thin slice of wood, generally made to overlay other, less expensive and less attractive woods, to provide a surface which gets a finish. In cues, they are used to enhance the appearance of the butts by creating attractive colours schemes and combinations, kind of like a frame around a picture. They provide either a contrasting clean break between one timber and another, or, a complimentary border between one timber and another. They are often seen in cues in fairly bold colours, and these are often made from white timbers like maple / sycamore, and are then dyed into the colours you see. These coloured veneers used in cues are mainly around 0.6mm and show as the thin bands of bright colours you see edging splicing. Having said that, veneers can also be thicker (maybe 1.5mm to 3mm) and can also be coloured, though the colour in these sometimes tends to be more faded and not as bold. Veneers can also be in natural timbers such as ebony, burrs and many others and have no dye whatsoever, as the timber itself provides an attractive enough finish.

I have no knowledge of cue making and by reading what Trev said, it seems to me that the pros on bonding solid section and planning down, to cue owner, is it could give a different, and maybe richer and more natural looking than veneers. The cons would be more effort and more skillful cue maker technique required. And of course more expensive.

Just curious would bonding solid section be more appropriate than veneer to use for broader banding.

Trevor finally updated me after I wrote a post here.
Apparently he mixed up my order with someone else, took him extra time to remake again.
He said it just need a final touch and will send me some pictures.

I just followed up with Trevor regarding his previous email 24/11/2012 saying would send me some images.
Until now he still hasn't get back to me yet.
Hopefully I will get it soon and post it up here.
