  • New cue for Ebdon!

Watching the PTC4 match between Ebdon and Burnett and he is using a new 1pc cue. Can't tell from the quality of the picture the make or even if its ash or maple but I can definitely see its a hand spliced cue with 4 lower splices and veneers of a dark brown wood, possibly thuya? Is anyone aware that Peter has been using a new cue recently, its the first I've seen him since he was hammered by Trump in China 2 weeks ago and he was using his old cue then.

Its ash, looked like it might be a wooldridge based on it having a black ferrule

Wonder how the 'blackspin' concept works with a massively over-sized mushroomed elk?

Hard to tell from the stream I was watching, I think only Mike can confirm this. He seemed to be playing well with it whatever it was, the reason I don't think it is a MW cue is because he played one shot where he screwed the extension in and it took a few twists to screw in and had a blue collar to extend the cue length. Now Mike's extension is a one click style and doesn't have a blue collar, its black.

The F1 extensions on my MW cue are not 1 click style?

But do you need quite a few turns in order to screw it in and is the collar blue? I was under the impression that Mike's joints where just one full turn, not like the cue craft 1 click, I probably used the wrong term to explain why I didn't think Ebdon was using a MW cue.

No, collar is black as you said. Not sure exactly how many turns, will need to wait till I get home to count them

                New cue for Ebdon!

Might be a Robin Cook cue, I remember a few months back someone who posts on here had one for sale and met up with Ebdon somewhere to let him try it. He didn't buy it but said he would be placing an order for one IIRC.

Well its a Stamford and its got something called a zenith ferrule technology fitted to it. Don't know if that is something developed by Stamford or is fitted from somewhere else. Just googled it and found nothing mentioned, interesting that Peter said its pretty much offers more spin and power with less throw than he's ever used before. Was only meant to be a back up cue but he's so pleased with it he'll probably use it from now on.

Yeah knowing stamford it won't be cheap though. I bet Mike is very very interested in this and might want a few answers on this from Stamford, unless of course its a different concept altogether though I highly doubt it myself. Maybe mike has sold it to Stamford or under licence but then would they be able to change the name?

Obviously it might be completely different to the Blackspin but only until they actually show the technology will anyone know!

I'm subbed to this, i'm sure this could get messy if it's a similar product to Mike's...

I'd doubt it, there are other makers (though granted, in The USA) who've been using a cored type ferrule for some time.

It's just new to those reading here it seems.

Yes is that Predator who use similar technology? Though I was thinking more of a uk patent regarding concept and colour but i'd say your right...

                              Expect more.

As snooker grows again as a participation sport with loads more new players, don't forget people today are raised in a technology and change era and will expect, want and pay for new ideas, particularly if they are advertised as being 'improved' helping you to play 'better' snooker.

When I started playing snooker you did not own a computer or mobile phone but today you update your technology regularly and if someone says something is good, the majority of the herd follow not wanting to be left out even if they think it makes no different as new is 'cool'.

That makes snooker with it's brass ferrules, elkmaster tips and green triangle chalk - all available at 15p a go - ripe for upgrading and the iphone carrying facebook mob will lap up any changes to keep up with the joneses.

Would Steve Davis or Ray Reardon have won more world titles with a blackspin ferrule, a laminated tip and some kamui chalk? Would David Taylor have made more than 7 consecutive centuries with a mini butt and a tele extension?

You can have the shiniest case in the world, a really rare hand made cue and the most expensive stick on bits but none of it is substitution for table time and once you can play the game you can play it with almost any straight normal cue with a decent tip and lump of chalk.

I knew there were loads of cues on eBay but was surprised when I saw here how many new hand made cues are for sale here too, it looks like the majority of hand made cues are put up for sale almost as soon as they are received.

Change is okay, if it makes one feel better or feel you are hitting the ball better, it is good, but I do worry that the sort of players who can't yet make a 50 break are being brainwashed into thinking that they need a hand made cue with a super ferrule that 'deflects' less with a tip that retains shape longer and chalk that grips better - they don't, they need to learn how to play first.

Then again, nothing wrong with having the best clubs in the boot of your ferrari in the golf club car park if it makes you feel good, even if you can't drive more than 20 yards without hitting a tree.
