As with many of the thai cue makers the main drawback is the finish as they usually lacquer the butt to make them look shiny and bring out the colour in the decorative woods they use. I'm sure you can order a cue and ask for it to be an oil and wax finish but if you don't then they will use their standard lacquer finish which is not ideal.

Then again Mastercue and Phoenix also lacquer their cues but its fairly easy enough to remove though I don't really mind it as it wears off over time anyway.

Just sent an email off to maximus on facebook. the plain black ebony cues from the ultimate range cost around £170. worth a try in my opinion.

looking through their facebook page you can see a lot of quality looking cues out there. may be laquered to get a shine out of the exotic woods, but that doesnt seem a problem.

Can any cue makers shed any light on what is going on with these shafts ???
ie what's with all the markings around them ??

Chisel marks after being turned on a lathe? probably hand finished in the direction of the grain to get rid of the marks, although I remember at school using fine sandpaper on pieces on the lathe and the wood used to come up lovely.

Kind of guessed that may be the case, but having never been near a lathe in my life, i presumed you would get a perfect clean shaft after each passing thro', never expected so see any lines like that

No those marks are just when the cues have been filled with grain filler. They rub it into the shaft and covers the cue all over, then it goes through fine sanding operation to clean the shaft on and give it a good finish ready for oiling.

But why would you get uniform lines around the cue doing that ???

This is what he is using since end of september, picked up in asia, originally it had a plain black butt, it was too short for him so i added the 4 secondary splices + matching mini butt.
Its the stiffest shaft i've ever come accross.

Maybe they are applying the grain filler whilst it is still on the Lathe? Could be the answer
