Any lobing error wouldn't be measured . .
does anyone know what he's talking about?

i've heard of datum, but no idea what lobing is. sounds like a sexual fetish to me...

Obviously didn't have any clue of how the cost would change from +/- 0.01mm he initially spec'd.

If you measure a 50p piece with a digital caliper, you'll get a smaller size than the diameter of hole it would fit through.

It's a lobed shape, and because it has an odd number of high points, you don't pick it up with a caliper
( a caliper will always pick up the lobe high point and an opposing flat ).

The red dia will be greater than the width ( green bit )

Probably won't matter with your tolerances though.

I ll bite . Think of a perfectly round hole e.g. F1 joint , introduce a round dent/protrusion ( can be more than one) in the circumference of the circle ( outward) . Tolerance of F1 = WRECKED , Integrity of F1 = Knackered , thus F1 joint crap. This is " lobing " and your engineer/machinist would probably describe it more eloquently than this N.B. before the engineers on the forum correct me this is the best description I could come up with after coming back from the pub .Another " lobed " shape is the rotor from a Wankel ( no comments, please ) rotary engine , sort of an isosceles triangle with equal curved not straight sides.Mike stop laughing..........
