  • Advice on new cue

New to the forums but been playing for about 12 years.

Looking to buy a new cue in about 6 weeks or so. Price is about £250 maybe push to £300 if needed.

What sort of names do people recommend I should be going to? Currently thinking of going to Dave Coutts after being recommended by a friend.

What sort of price range is he? I haven't had a proper look, this was just a recommendation from a friend.

Any other names that are in range?

only one piece of advice is relevant to the purchase of any cue. Try before you buy irrespective of the maker.

In an ideal world yes that's true.
Where are you in the Country ?? A trip to Greenbaize, or Craftsman's could be a good idea, cues in that price range no problem.
The GBL cues in particular from Greenbaize are about as good as you can get

              Wakefield, Yorkshire.

Yes my current cue is a craftsman, just looking to try a different one. I have tried 100s of cues over the past few months and have sorted out sizes/weights/balance/wood etc that I would like.

Do u want the cue in six weeks or place the order in six?

That could be the key to your options.

Well I would assume that it would take time to make if I go down that route so placing the order in 6.

Which is true, but it never hurts to get a wider opinion from experienced people. Plus as pointed out, they wouldn't really be in my price range.

and what was the conclusion? I'm sort of unsure what you are looking for here. A cue is a cue, forget the brand or name badge, if you like one and you say you've tried hundreds then buy it. Getting a particular brand of cue is not a great idea unless you are a bit of a collector or don't mind taking a gamble. Just because you might know the spec that you like it doesn't mean to say that having a cue made to that spec that the cue will suit you.

If I was in your situation I would go to Craftsman when you are ready seeing as though they are within distance to you and try out every cue in the shop or those around the size that you are looking for and settle on one. You simply cannot beat trying out a load of cues on a table and choosing one.

Got to agree, there is nothing better than trying a cue out first. But if your gonna order one, let me know and I will give you a price.
