Not quite as simple as that but if you look at the turned butts on the shelve they have profile marks for the centres on

It would be brainless if they were to turn Ebony squares by hand and is not easy to get them bang on round
which you really need when splicing.
Also getting the taper is difficult but far easier with a taper attachment on a lathe.
As I know Robert Osborne very well I'm informed that they never had there own lathe and if they did it would make sense to fit the ferrules on it.
When Rob got involved he was the one who had a lathe and learned every job ie jointing and they stopped going Mick Reece.
