  • African blackwood

Hi has any of our top cuemakers ever used African blackwood ? I have been shown some and it looks the business but reluctant to use it !! Dont think it sits well with the puritan cue die-hards . Curious !!

Do a search (entire post) for blackwood or mpingo (I think is its other name) and you will hit some other threads where I think this wood has been used.

sorry for not explaining, the pieces i worked with, the grain was so twisted in direction, and with it being so hard a wood(literally)tearout was bad.

My main cue has blackwood splices. I personally quite like it, hard to show up the difference in photos though, seems to have more depth to it, but is often not a uniform black.

I found it to be one of the nicest woods I've worked with. The finish was unbelievable!

My Steve grice cue is made of African Blackwood. Steve recommended it as I wanted something slightly different to ebony - absolutely love the cue :-)

I think you just have to treat it with lots of respect and take tiny bits off it . lol

I've used it and its horrible to plane and very brittle.
Cues can however come up really nice with it.
It's a bit heavier than ebony also.
