Why is ebonex rarely an option?

For the people that must have jet black butts, is there something about ebonex that puts off other cue makers using it? From what I've seen it feels about as smooth as ebony and is as black as you like, possibly doesn't have a similar density as ebony to make up the weight in the butt?

I think you've answered the question yourself, I think the fact its not solid or dense enough doesn't make it a good option to help weight the cue, particularly 3/4 jointed cues which usually have solid ebony butts. Whether you can work it as well as wood or not I'm not sure either. I know that peradon did an ebonex cue in their range which looked alright but don't know anyone that owned one.

According to peradons waffle on their site its hand spliced onto cues the same as ebony so im assuming its easy enough to work with.

Don't really think I've seen anyone offering it but peradon.

Peradon use it on some of their lower end cues, gives the appearance of ebony and according to them its hand spliced onto the cue same as ebony is.

On looking at some of those pics though it has the appearance of those cues with the painted on splices.

I thought ebonex meant any old cheap brown wood dyed black so as such more of a coating to existing material and just another name for ebonised ?

That's what I thought, apparently ebonised is the spray on coating stuff that mimics splicing, ebonex is stuff that can be spliced on like ebony.

I have owned a Peradon Lazer with Ebonex spliced butt. Looks aesthetically pleasing at first glance although I would go as far as saying it cheapened the cue in my eyes as close up it almost looks plastic coated, its jet black. Weighting doesn't seem like a problem as it has a nice weight distribution. I personally think its all just a marketing gimmick from Peradon though...there is nothing that it brings that competes with a nice solid ebony butt.

Nothing to do with the Ebonex debate but after playing with this cue I wouldn't go with another Peradon, the splices are completely uneven, the shaft is a smooth as a pensions bum and the ferrule managed to slip so that it was raised on one side, whilst the other side pushed down into the shaft causing problems with the wood.

to me:
ebonised = black paint
ebonex = plastic

Pretty sure that ebonex is some sort of acrylic man made substance which strenghtens Peradons profits in the lower end market but wont affect their mid range real wood cr*p
