  • Plain Ebony or Amboyna Burr butt??

    Hi guys,
I have been lurking around for few days and cant make up my mind. Should i get amboyna burr with thick maple veneer or just plain black ebony butt? Taking up trevor white custom cue.

I find black ebony butt is so classic n nice but trevor finishing on amboyna is top class.

I cant get 2 cues due to tight budget.

    Really appreciate someone can help.

    Thanks

Its personal decision mate, to be honest I had a similar problem deciding what design to go with on my TW. In the end I went with my initial plan and decided on a Thuya burr splice with a thick maple veneer. Good luck in your decision and I am sure it will be worth the dreaded waiting time, I ordered mine just over 8 months ago so hopefully only 4 months to go! :snooker:

I'd say Trevor's finish on any wood is top class. Wonder where he sources them, they always turn out fabulous.

Go for amboyna burl. It's arguably the most beautiful wood for turning.

I vote for amboyna with thick maple
But then I am biased as I have a cue with this configuration.
Trevor also mentioned before that if you have thick lmaple he uses maple stock not veneers to ensure quality, consistency and look of the result

At first i was thinking classic black ebony the best. No fancy splice and very professional look. But after seeing others cues with nice tulipwood, kingwood, ovangol or amboyna splice, i became uncertain. Awww.... Its an expensive cue, dont wanna regret. Haha

No answer to this question seriously, it's all up to your own personal preference. Waste of time really

I've got a single long amboyna splice with no veneer on order which I think will look pretty classy. the thick maple veneer is too common now, everyone seems to have them so I much prefer the long splice as it blends in nicely with the ebony IMO.

Thanks people for your opinions. I will go ahead to get single splice then.

A mate recently got a new cue (Travis) single long splice of thuya burr with no maple and it is gorgeous
Of course it is a personal preference whatever you go for but be assured whichever you go for you will love it

My all-time favourites are amboyna, camphor burl, thuya, cocobolo, tulipwood and karelian. No need complicated designs on these woods, they're beautiful the way they are. Maybe just plain veneers to bring out the wood pattern.

Run a google search on exotic wood turning images. It's like porn...

I find this design rather nice for a single front splice. Clean lines and the thick veneers emphasizes the front splice.

Amboyna would be a better fit for color itself is nice whether the figure is nice or not.

For thuya sometimes you get an unfavourable splatter it can go wrong.

Agreed, sometimes the "eyes" distribution is not that aesthetically pleasing but when you get a good piece, whoa.
