Originally cues were made in one piece, then for a carrying around convienience the 1/2 jointed cue came about. Then as some prefered the longer shaft the 3/4 evoloved as it still fit easily in a car boot or on a backseat but theres only one reason for a 3/4 and a 1/2 jointed one I can think of and thats a bit lame where a 3/4 is cut again to fit a 1/2 case.

Another reason could be for uk 8ball pool!
      Small rooms and all that!
Doesn't happen as much any more!
Baracuda used to be jointed twice so you could carry the cue like a 2pc and shorten the cue by taking the middle out and sticking the butt to the top!
Craftsman 3/4 cues will fit a mini butt to the main shaft to make a small cue!
