  • Fairly new player, looking for a decent cue to practise with

    Hi guys, first post

I've been playing snooker every now and again for the last year or two, but I've now decided to get into practising properly and I've been going to the local club almost every night.

I must stress that I'm not a very good player yet, and still struggle to pot any more than 2-3 balls in a run, but I'm forever struggling with the two cues I have and swapping between the two (one is bent, one is too heavy (550g) and very sticky, despite all my efforts to clean/polish it). I'm not really happy with either.

I know I probably shouldn't be looking at something like a Parris yet as I'm not good enough and don't know my perfect size/weight, but I do want a nice cue that doesn't have all the lacquer rubbish on it that I can just practise with and know it isn't the cue that's the problem. I'm 5ft 11" seem to prefer a lighter cue, something around 18z maybe.

I've been looking at the Peradon crown/lazer, any recommendations? Thanks!
    - The Mad Technician.

    Cue: Master Cue Pro-Butt 4 - 18oz, 9.5mm
Current Highest Break: 52 (working on it )

First of all you could get the bent cue straightened and the heavy one's weight adjusted and re-finshed by a local cue maker. Personally id stay clear of those Peradon cues as they're often laquer finished so they become sticky quickly and the Lazer cue is spliced with ebonex not ebony. My suggestion for a new cue would be to message Andrew, Adr147 on here, he'll almost certainly have something in your price range and will give you sound advise.

Good handmade cues as well .

What is your budget and it will give them an idea .

Check out the items for sale threads and see if something there might suit you. BTW, 18 oz's isn't light, but I have one just under 16 oz's for sale, totally handmade and quite cheap, check it out.

Thanks jack. I think I saw your cue on ebay actually . Two quick questions if I may:

            - Does that cue have the sticky lacquer coating on it?
            - I currently play with a 9.5mm tip, would I experience any trouble with a 9mm?

            Cheers!

no laquer just naturally treated and finished, very smooth cue, as regards tip wouldn't think so as you are just starting out will be easy to adapt, quality cue just got use to my old 1 piece so decided against change, would always refund if you weren't happy, case and extension worth £50 alone

I am very tempted, sounds better than most others I've looked at so far. As you say it's new I would assume it's in good condition, not warped etc?

straight as a die, had one frame with it after I changed the tip from the fitted master tip to a elkmaster, was a custom order to same spec as my one piece but as a jointed cue for ease of transport but decided to stay with one piece cue

You probably will struggle below 9.5mm on a snooker table at the level you have said your at. My advice don't go below 9.5mm, like said you will get something nice from ADR or something will crop up in snooker spec on here...

ps... 9mm and lower is pool spec not snooker, unless you cue straight as a die like Shaun Murphy!

like all things snooker cue related personal choice on cue spec, I know a lot of century break standard players(myself included) using 9 mil tips.
whats your location chris you could try somewhere like craftsman or greenbaize who have tables and will let you try out various spec cues before you buy, and as I said if you don't get on with cue will give you a refund don't know many on here who will do that and as you saw listing on ebay you can see from feedback I am trustworthy

Very true Jack, but for a player who struggles potting a few balls in a row, half a cm is a big difference, though it is a nice cue, mastercue produce some excellent value for money sticks...

I'm in Bideford, North Devon. Not many places round here that I know of that sell anything above bog standard Riley/BCE.

Thanks for the offer jack, what I've done today is removed the weight from one of my cues and taken the lacquer off. I'm pretty sure it's still not going to work well for me, but I'll give it a try tonight and see how it goes.

The size of the tip puts me off a little, as I struggle to shoot straight as it is, but other than that your cue sounds great so I may well take you up on that.
