Cue Badge Design?

The badge works for me and obviously the inclusion of the eagle for your heritage should be retained as this is personal to you and part of your identity.I agree with Dean about " centreing " the eagle and may I suggest that perhaps colour is not needed and only adds to the cost . Traditionally I would suggest that there are more plain black lettered badges ( as well as litho based picture badges ) than coloured , so maybe plain is better. Good luck in your venture , its refreshing to see someone new and so enthusiastic emerging , especially as you seem to actively seek help and suggestions on TSF , something other members should have done , in the past.Keep it up and thanks for sharing.

Thank you, There were two reasons for the coloured text, one it is one of the colours of poland and secondly as you say not many use it. I have seen it on the red plates, and also dave coutts i think uses them sometimes. But I suppose there could be good reason why there aren't many. I always appreciate help and suggestions. I'm always learning and willing to take others advice.

Well for materials used i would say very good. I never thought to ask for a different colour background, ie the White is a little bright, maybe cream (if available) would look better ?? Plus never going to look as classy as an engraved badge but they are a lot more expensive for a one off. By the way Sanman got them from Ryder for around £4 each but he ordered around 20, so it's the set up cost of the machine really you are paying for, not the materials used.
I have already been turned down by a cue maker to get it fixed so looks like i may have to give it a go myself lol
Am going to ask Tony Glover 1st tho for a price to make and fit a badge, just to satisfy my curiousity

Thanks, I asked about ivory, as you say the white looks quite bright. At £4 each thats not too bad. I will give Ryder an email and see if the badge (eagle) is possible.

Good luck in getting the badge fitted. I will probably be in the same situation as you in a few weeks time. Trying to fit/butcher the badge on lol. I think i'm just going to find a cheap pillar drill and use a router bit and keep my fingers and legs crossed it does it all by itself.

Coloured text has been around since before 1930 e.g. Hixons used black and red on the same badge. Recently Permac used coloured inks on the Olympic to represent the rings . As you say on even more modern cues you are right H&O & their variants , Coutts, Glovers etc all have or had coloured letters/fonts on their badges. N.W. Cues , a personal favourite of mine , used to do a " red rose " badge and this list is not in any way exhaustive , there are many many more I think the problem with some coloured badges is the fact that sometimes the colours fade ( osbourne cues as an example), this is less of a problem on engraved badges , but worth remembering .Of course a plain badge will also be less expensive to make and this is why I believe that it is the most common badge found e.g. J.P , O Min ,Master Cue , T.W, M.W, Craftsman etc the list goes on. If the coloured text is important to you , do not let any one persuade you to use anything else , stick to your guns and create a different brand that ultimately you are proud to put your name to , because it means something to you as a cue builder and craftsman. p.s. Ivory background is softer and may be more pleasing to the eye , might even give an " antique/vintage " look to the badge.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realise that so many had done coloured badges. I'm still relatively new to the sport so learning about these things all the time. The person that I have the quote from so far, has no price differential between plain and coloured. I agree that the ivory will give that softer look.

I would agree with what was said earlier in that your first couple of efforts may not be as good as you hope for.
I made some mistakes and looking at some older plates i did i kringe a little when i see them.
I have recently used Ryder & Chaddock and there is no set up cost for engraved plates as used by parris and tw etc, however there is for the reversed engraved laminate ones.
if you use your imagination though, there is ways you can do they yourself and have a very professional finish.
Have you got a press drill to do the badges, this is very important.

Cheers for the advice. At the moment I don't have a press drill, it's currently on the shopping list.

I ended up getting a few made by the chap on ebay, which arrived today. Haven't turned out too bad but I think I will contact Ryder & Chaddock to see what they can do. I won't be putting any badges on anything I don't think meets the grade, so probably quite a few cues down the line. I have a couple on the go at the moment hopefully they turn out out ok.

I have considered it, however the circular badges seem to be the norm these days. At the moment I'm just trialling methods for the badges

I did try that, I made the same design in the colours you said and the one I posted I just preferred the red text. Personal preference I guess

Yes go with personal preference. I looked up the Internet and saw a lot of Polish Eagles. Nice bit of history involved. For the letters I'm a big fan of that fancy Gothic? looking style on the Coutts cues. Looks classy IMO. Good luck.

Right then, recycling this thread as I'm after a less cluttered design as I'm going to get some badges made up properly. Something just wasn't quite right with the last lot. Does anyone have any ideas? You never know I may end up using it
