  • Powerglide Masse

I am in Hobart Australia where there are no billiard/snooker stores. The only one that did carry some gear was burnt down late last year.

I want to buy a cue around the $100 -$150 mark, hard to justify anything more expensive. I have been looking on EBAY and the Poweglide Masse is selling for $114 free delivery. Should I consider this or is there something else I should be looking at? Help please!! :snooker:

Maybe try some pool halls or is there a snooker club in Hobart. They might have a selection of cues to try out/buy. Or maybe see if any shops in Melbourne have some options that they could post.

Given you might play with the cue for years to come it might be worth increasing your budget a little bit.

Do you want a one piece or 3/4 cue?

    Length?

Do you have your own table or where do you play?
My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
    I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

Thanks for the reply mythman. There are no snooker halls in Hobart, I know very uncultured! Only pub pool! I bought my own 3/4 table about 18 months ago, it came with a set of cues. I am using the 57 inch 1 piece, 11mm screw tip. feels a little light and whippy to me. I like the two piece idea as I can put it away in a case when not in use, offers a little more protection from the elements. I also would like something with a more solid feel.

My research suggests that powerglide have been making cues for a long time, but I am a little worried about buying a cue I can't handle beforehand.

Are there other brands worth considering particularly if I need to buy online?

I have a vintage 2 piece powerglide purist about 57.5-58" , 9.5mm-10mm tip and weighs approx. 17-17.5 oz. Sights just off straight but plays good. Balance point is forward at around 18.5". Has the Rex Williams signature on it. Was going to keep it but can sell for $100 + postage to you.

Thanks for the offer, I will keep it in mind, but I would like to buy a "virgin" cue. However from your response it seems you have been happy with the powerglide. Are there any other brands that we can access in Australia relatively easily that I should be considering.

not too sure if your after something new but may need to look abroad for something decent which will require an increase in the budget

Thanks Kev for the advice, but can you suggest what brand(s) I should look for and what is the lower end of budget I should be considering? Also when you say abroad, where do you mean?

there are some very good cues from Thailand and Malaysia, such as Phoenix and Master Cue, etc.
they do start at a good budget and many consider them the be the best for the money at that range

Thanks Dean and Kev. This certainly gives me something to look for now, rather than driving blind! It looks like Master Cue, then also look at Phoenix, O'min and GBL. So in Malaysia and Thailand then.

well, GBL - Green Baize Ltd - run by Stu Green in the UK, he has a range of GBL cues that are made for him in Thailand and are highly rated but I think they are only available from his UK-shop.

he also stocks many other makes (including Master Cue and Phoenix I believe (?)) and is a great guy to have a chat with, he wont lead you wrong

                          p.s. welcome to TSF

OK Stu may not be local to you, but if you are unsure about what your spec/needs/requirements are Stu is great at helping unsure players, as a chat could be a good start, you never know, postage to Tassie may not be as much as you thought.
