Well if i'm planing off thick I use a normal vice and rotate the cue by 22.5 deg so that you an octagonal form and when it comes to the rounding part I use one hand to hold and rotate and then the other to plane.
Do you use the Mike technique, or a hand plane ?

    • Nice Rogi, can't beat that plain ebony butt.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

I dunno, ebony with a touch of snakewood does it more for me. .

You're not wrong though, nice looking cue.

Is the customer a member on here Adam ?

No electric planes, I use 3 hand planes small block plane (103), a low angle jack (62) and a jack plane (5)

I also prefer an additional splice, but plain ebony is classic plus the customer is always right.

Indirectly no the customer is not a member

              • Hello there,
Nice progress with the cue making.

I am personally thinking about starting to make cues myself. I am 27 and a regular pool player.

Just wondered if you have any tips on selecting Ash shaft wood?
I will be looking to go to the local timber merchants soon.

As for getting the “Arrows” on the timber with the black grain, how is this achieved?
                Any tips are much appreciated.

                Many thanks in advance…
                Jas

                  • Haven't posted on here for a while as I had some personal issues stopping me making the cues. Anyway heres a pic of one I started quite some time ago and recently finished - bar the weight and joint.
I also trialled a new finishing technique for the butt to give it a nicer sheen and its definitely worked imo.

Fairly complex one for me with 12 splices, lovely figuring in the Amboyna and I tried something a little different with the Amboyna end cap.

                        • Really impressive work(of art).
The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

                            • That is awesome, I keep talking about taking an attempt at one. This just pushes me that much more, I have to source out the wood.

Depends on which one you think the veneer is. When I showed a few of my friends the other day they presumed the thicker figured wood under the amboyna was a veneer but I actually spliced thin so that it didn't show through the butt ( i wanted more amboyna to show) any way that is actually spalted curly maple. The thin veneers highlighting the sides are red dyed maple and thin quilted maple.

Go for it Les, make sure your plane is well tuned!!!!
