I don't think the type of finish should be looked at as an 'absolute', there's really no right or wrong cue finish (within reason that is), surely it's more dependant on what the customer wants / likes.
I normally just ask the customer first what type of 'feel' they want, then I choose appropriately, some players prefer the lightest of finishes, you would hardly know any oil was applied whereas some players like that thick 'glass-like' coating, go figure!
But hey, isn't the customer always right

Have to agree with jim, cue finish is a personal preference. If you know how to use shellac it doesn't become sticky. I've heard tru-oil takes an enormous amount of coats to build up a finish.
For the shaft I use a mix of oils, that includes raw linseed over boiled. I buff it with either a silk or nylon rag to get a light sheen. It kind of burnishes it smooth at the same time.

I dont like using a different finish for butt and shaft. The cue should feel and look the same all over imho. Look at well used American Pool cues...the difference between shaft and butt is horrible, isnt it?mind control > body control > cue control > ball control
