I got this story by Tony glover. A friend of mine, had exactly the same problem with his Rly cue!!( a few years ago )
So, he made a few pictures and send it to Tony G,,, and asked his opinion about it !!!
He said,, with one piece cue,, the shaft runs in the button. (is not same story as 3/4 cue), as we all know.
Sometimes they use a thinner layer ebony around the shaft (this usually happens in the area nearby the splits),, why they are doing this, I don't know. Perhaps because of price of the wood. (ebony is an expensive wood).
So,, I realy think,, that yellow stuff what you see,,,,,,, is mapel . anyway, just my opinion.( can't say that I am sure of this, I see only the photos )
