Super stupid question from a non-player...

This is a really silly question...but I don't play snooker so I have never really bothered to learn about the cues etc.
I heard from a friend that the cues have a coating of glassfibre? Is this true..?? I thought they were all wood and you had to take care of tthem really well with linseed oil etc...
Can anyone enlighten me?
Also, what kind of cue, is the best one for a beginner?

Almost all cues are wood (ash or maple). Theres a company called Cuetec that makes fiberglass coated cues but personally I would avoid them like the plague.

Cuecraft and Peradon cues often pop up in threads recommending starter cues but I don't have any personal experience with them.

The rack cues in the pool department of our hall are Cuetec fibreglass cues. They have a very good durability, which is good for the owners. I use them my break cue, but they're too unresilient for actual playing. Better than your average rack cue though.

I think the easiest answer regarding what cue is right for a beginner is the cue that feels right. I think it has been discussed before on here that even some pro's still play with very inexpensive cues purchased from sports shops. (Alan McManus being one). I think to get your self a decent cue as a starter cue you could not go wrong with the Peradon Classic (only available as a 2 piece). This cue is made from high quality ash and has a very plain single front splice of Rosewood. The ash is straight grain and matches across the joint - something to look for when buying a cue as it means the cue is from the same piece of wood throughout giving greater consistency.

If you are looking for a 3/4 starter cue the Edwardian (again by Peradon) is an excellent choice. This cue has a solid ebony butt section (that will give the cue more weight) and a high quality ash shaft.

Most off the shelf cues all feature a ash shaft as opposed to maple.

most cues are made of ash or maple although they are made in steamed pearwood, oak, ebony , hickory and graphite etc aswell as to best cue it depends on what you like, a cue is just a tool and there is no one that is better for a beginner.
