  • shaft width taper- a standard or not?

I have ordered a cue from Peradon. all is well except the shaft is on the thicker side. its a 10mm tip 58" . at the point of 30 cm from tip it measures almost 15mm. Im looking for a 14mm tops at this point. I order by net, ( I dont live in UK ) and dont have a chance to view it beforehand.
So is it a standard for all 10mm tips? How can I know this measures as it is not pointed out on specs?

I'm no expert but I don't think there is a standard. I've had a few cues from different cue makers and the tapers have all been different. The last cue I bought I was very specific in what taper I wanted and the cue maker did his best to accommodate me but I think it's a bit of a juggling act to get things exact. The cue maker needs to juggle weight, balance, tip size, shaft stiffness etc etc. I'll be interested in what the experts have to say on this.

Also if I can get people here to write their width at the point of 30cm from tip and the tip size- that could also help. Seems to me 15mm width on 30cm from tip is wide , but I dont have much experience.

I try to aim for 14mm around that area. But for me it depends on how stiff the shaft is, if its a little stiffer I may taper it a little thinner.

Joe Davis black plate Special 10.5 & 14.2

So as you can see if you are getting close to 15 i would say that is chunky

Mastercraft 14.1mm 9.6 tip. C-Brand from Thailand 14.3mm 9.6 tip. Both Maple shafts. My preference is for "thinnish" shafts.

Thanks for the elaborated info, that was very useful indeed.
There are some thoughts about sanding it down myself , though I feel its somewhat of a sin...

Forget the thoughts about sanding it down please !! It could prove to be tricky !! There will be a member in your area that will do it for you and for less than all the sandpaper and heartache it will cost you !!
