  • Snooker cue butt size... opinions?

I had an old Powerglide Midas Touch which from memory i believe had a thick butt maybe 32mm, my cues after that have all been around 30mm and to be honest i haven't been able to settle, I have tried heat shrink to make my current butt 32mm but i didn't like the feel of rubber over wood...

Does having big hands necessarily mean a thick butt will feel better and vice versa?

I was maybe a bit naive Les thinking I could get used to a slimmer cue than I was used too...

I wonder If I'd be better trying to get a new butt made, or take the hit and sell on, do you know if the old 3/4 joint and butt extension joint can be reused..?

Should be fine reusing the original butt mate! Just get 4 splices added to the size you want. Or cheaper would be to have the joint removed and fitted to a new butt. I have had both done in the past.

I never thought about added splices... I'll get in contact with some of our cue makers on here... Thanks

Just curious but when you say large hands what are we talking? My span from tip of pinky to tip of thumb is 9inches but my palm is taller, from wrist to bottom of fingers (4 1/4inches), than my fingers are long (3 3/8)... meaning that as a motorbike rider I have to buy oversized gloves so that I don't get pinching in the webbing of my fingers when gripping the bars...

I have wondered about going with a larger butt too so I would be interested in any comparison of hand sizes
            Cheers,
            Mick

With palm facing up, wrist to bottom fingers 4 1/2 then longest finger 3 1/2...

I've found problems with 29/30mm butts in relation to gripping with index finger and upper part of thumb, with not being able to grip it firmly without having to use the lower part of the finger to exert the same or all of the pressure, which seems to be a no no with certain coaches, books etc...

Sounds like we are both in the same boat... have you considered using a round butt? I haven't tried but wondered if that might help as well.

Funnily enough i have though it was 29.5mm and still felt pretty slim from memory but with a bigger diameter you could be right, also it was my first maple shafted cue, i couldn't work out why i didn't like it, though at a push I'd say butt size and the different hit from a maple shaft. It got to the stage i was tinkering too much with it so sold it on.
