  • Cue weight and tip size questions

Hi, everyone, to start off with, i would like to say that i understand at the end of day, there is no perfect cue, only there is more comfortable cue that suits oneself regardless of cue length, weight and tip size. questions below are really looking for more professional or technical answers. many thanks.

could anyone please tell me what exactly does cue weight have effects on? Does lighter cue give more control and heavier ones or a heavier one gives one slighter more cue power? or Is it the balance of the cue more important?

besides, physically, what effects does the size of tip have on cue ball? Is it true that smaller the tip, more spin you can get on the cue ball, thus sometimes it is harder to control, whereas with bigger tip, you don't have to be so accurate, but the spin will more difficult to create when you need to.

Finally, another important question. Is one piece cue better than joined cue? and is three quarter joined cue better than center joined cue? I honesty want to buy a center joined cue because it is easier to carry around, but i don't want to lose the advantage that a one piece might or might not have because of this. what effects does cue length have on someone's play? Why would some profesional players grab their cue so far away from the butt? instead, why don't they just use a much shorter cue?

I would love to hear any advice. thanks in advance.

Basically whatever the specs of your cue , light or heavy , thick or thin etc the cue should be able to do and react the way you want it to in all departments , around the balls , long shots , power shots etc . As for where people hold the cue its personal preference , some players will hold the cue at the back for power and long shots and bring it up an inch or two when in and around the balls , whilt others will hold the cue in the same place regardless .
its what works for you and what you feel comfortable with . If i was starting out at a young age and wanted a model player to copy it would be Ding as i think his technique is textbook , very compact , uncomplicated and a joy to watch .

Not to hijack your thread mate, but in addition to what you asked: I see people talking about stiff vs. soft shaft (haha) -- what would one want?
      Shreddin' balls :livid:
