  • Coutts customised cues

    Hi,

Coutts cues give you the option of buying a fully handmade cue by Dave himself, or one he buys in part made and finishes himself.

Anyone had one of the cues just finished by Dave?

How are they compared to a completely hand made cue from Dave?

    Opinions much appreciated !

Dave has a big reputation for superb hand made cues. Not heard of him ever working on bought in / part made cues.
Also is renowned for making great replicas of old cues or matching a cue you like, he can duplicate the tapering with a special jig he has.
I would say, order a customer cue from Dave with confidence.
Dave has obviously also done refurbs and alterations for many on TSF with great feedback.
Have you seen any cue that was not made wholly by him and sold as such?

sorry not seen these anyone got any images of these?
        cheers

ah found them on the website from Premier onwards
"These cues are pre-turned shafts made for us to which we add various splicing to customers specifications"

so "pre-turned shafts" means to me there is no butt splices, decorations etc.

not heard any feedback on these

Yeah they're the ones I'm talking about. There is an 18-24 month lead time on his cues but the 'customised by Dave' cues can be completed in approx 8 weeks. I'm expecting they'll still be top standard cues just wondering if anyone here had had any experience of them.

So those coutts cues are made basically the same way as the cues Jason Owen and Crispian got a lot of grief over

True and as his description clearly states pre - turned with splices being added by himself then no mis-representation is being done and no one is being misled

As mentioned before, the term "pre-turned shafts", to me, are over-sized shafts only without any butt splices yet. So not the same as mentioned in the previous thread about completed cues being bought in and modified.
Correct me if I am wrong, these are different from Dave's custom cues, in that the custom cues are hand-planed from square stock and not turned?

I actually like a lot of the cues coming out of asia. You get what JP describes as Ultimate shafts for pocket money. If you buy from the right sellers the splicings are getting better and better as well.
Ive bought quite a few of these over the last 3 years including another 2 last week and the quality is definately improving.

If Dave is getting the shafts from the same source as Crispian or vice versa they will be Cracking Cues as I have had Many!....lol

oh yes, the quality has never been an issue, and as you say some are superb.
Who knows, Dave may be getting these pre-turned dowels from someone in UK and not asia
I understand Mastercraft often make up pre-turned shafts for others (not saying that is where DC is getting them from).
                        We may never know...
