You may be talking about shop prices, but Gazza wasn't. He was talking about how much people are willing to pay for one.
No waiting etc. .

I just bought a peradon pro cue off ebay and they are heavilly varnished and certainly don't hold there value. That said they strip down well, quality wood underneath, makes you wonder why they insist on the varnish, and who is paying the £180 asking price for a varnished cue?No one is listening until you make a mistake!

If the varnish is removed it's best to apply linseed oil or similar to the cue about twice a year to keep the moisture content of the wood at a level where it won't start to dry out and warp.
There's a good chance that the wood is seasoned and/or kiln dried but the varnish is a back up that's used by many mass producers who don't give weeks or months between different stages of planing or turning of the shaft in order to see if the wood moves, which is what a good cue maker would do when hand making a one off.

i was lucky to buy an old(ish) smith and nesaon sportsman cue off andy travis a few months ago. its 17oz and 57 1/2", plays really well and straight. its not the cue but what the player does with it, spending £500 on a cue will not make you a better player.
