The first cue I made was out of a scrap length of oak I got off a chippy at work, single iroko splice, again from scrap wood. Plays fine, been using it regularly ever since. I've read comments on here about oak having a lifeless feel to it but I don't find that myself.
I find oak very tough and forgiving, mediumish flex and feels similar to ash in my opinion. Can't say the same for the iroko though, dents when you look at it wrong! No use whatsoever for cue making!
Good luck with yours, stick a picture up!
NB. I've been given a couple of white oak whisky barrel lids from the Glenfiddich distillery near me and I'm going to try it for splices. No idea what it'll come out like bit have seen a few 9 ball cue butts made with oak and they look decent when finished.
