This may sound like a dumb question; what if you don't do anything about a small dent? What could happen to the cue in the long run?

Exactly mate. As long as it's not bothering your sighting, catching on your bridge hand, chest or chin it won't affect the way you play.
Fairly easy to get rid of a dent though. PM me if you want to lift it out, only takes five mins and isn't difficult at all.

Depending on size of dint, get a cotton ear bud wet and put it on the dent and tape it on gently with masking tape and leave over night, this will make the wood swell up and help remove some of the dent, I have done this many times over the years to help repair cues for lads at my old WMC and does the trick, then carefully use a very fine 0000 wire wool to finish, and re-treat the cue using your favourite cue oil I personally use Mr Wooldridge's cue oil. Hope This Helps.

I've always used water and lighter fluid as in this video http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cdtsa4Sazvw#
Even large deep dents lift out within minutes. Fluid burns so quick it cant damage wood but always advisable to lightly sand existing finish away first!
