  • Beware of hobbiest cue makers

Why do hobbiest cue makers charge profesional prices when the cant produce anywhere near the same quality of cue!

  • #2
I think the alternative question is why do people purchase cues from hobbiest cue makers when they should know that they can not produce the same quality of cue.

That depends on what to you call professional prices.

That's surprising, I think a few members on here have had cues from Jim and been happy with them, and they are members who have seen and played with lots of cues. I'm sure every cue maker has the odd issue, cant the problem be sorted out?

May I ask what you consider a " professional price " to be ? Allow me to elaborate , if materials cost say £50 minimum ( ash blank , ebony , ferrule , tips , abrasives , adhesives , power , lighting etc,etc ) and we allow a labour rate of £5 per hour ( less than minimum wage ) and the " hobbyist " spends 20 hrs on a cue then that cue has to make £150 to break even .If the " hobbyist " uses even an imported blank at £80 - £100 and just finishes it he or she will still have to charge £130-£150 if they spend 10 hours on that cue and that would be a plain ebony and ash / maple cue . I do not wish to start an argument but I know some " hobbyists " can produce a cue to the same quality ( if not better than ) some mass market or supposedly high end makers. There are plenty of examples on the " Post Pictures Of Your Cue " thread to back up this statement.

Y should a brand new cue have to be sorted it should be perfect and strait and as close to specs as u ask for not just watever the cue maker decides!

If your ordering a cue you should get what you asked for specs wise or whats the point. If its not what
                            you ordered send it back.

I purchased a one piece cue from Jim about 12 months ago, maybe not a Trev, MW or JP but a nice playable cue. I wasn't expecting perfection as I have tried making a cue myself and without a professional set up its a difficult skill.

All my dealings with Jim have been first class, probably the most helpful forum member on here. I'm sure Jim would give a refund if you are unhappy, why not try asking him instead of trying to put his hard work down.
