  • Re Badged Cue Advice

Ok, last year Andrew Ramsay sold me a top of the range 3/4 Chinese 'LP' cue with titanium joints and the cue was originally made for the ex world billiard champion Mike Russell and had a small circular badge with 'Mike' at the top and 'Russell' at the bottom and 'LP Cues' in the centre. I know from one of Mikes friends that the full price was over £1000 and Mike actually had to pay over £600 for it.

The cue has an absolutely perfect ash shaft with the straightest of side grain and beautiful well spaced arrows and all splice work is absolutely spot on. The only problem for me is that the cue was made at 57in and I have struggled to use it as I am over 6ft and have to hold the cue at the very end so I have finally decided to send the cue to Dave Coutts to extend it to 58.5in length.

This means that when Dave has finished he will rebadge the cue for me with (within reason) whatever I want on a badge..........obviously 'Customised' by Dave Coutts......but I wondered what the best wording should be? If Customised by Dave Coutts (or Coutts Cues) is on the outside of the badge should I get 'The Mike Russell Cue' on the inside. Or should I get a larger rectangular badge rather than the circular badge?

I just wondered what advice I would get from the snooker forum for the best looking badge?

Oldgit ......... and my name is 'Mike Russell'!!

Hi Mike, so how many cues do you have now lol
Personally i would stick with a round version and keep "Mike Russell" somewhere on the badge, the bonus is it's also your name ehh
What wood are you extending it with ??

I've got about 8 cues at the moment!! The cue has a plain black ebony butt with a single Thuya burr face splice over a maple secondary splice and I love it so want Dave to extend with black ebony and replace the single Thuya face splice.

It is your old cue!! You bought it off ebay from Mike Russells friend in Mboro (Billy Bousefield) and you ended up donating it to the Fred England raffle. The guy who won it eventually gave it back to Fred who took it up to Ramsay Towers and Andrew ended up with it........he then contacted me as it had my name on it!! So I know the full history of the cue.

Maybe you could ask Dave Coutts if the badge could be salvaged? There have been similar circumstances where people have requested a badge to be re-fitted.
Or, if that's not an option, perhaps, you could ask Tony Glover if he could make you a copy of the old badge.

I am not sure if its possible to save the badge, I will have to ask Dave Coutts advice. The original badge is a lovely mother of pearl effect but is perfectly flush fitted which is why I am not sure if it can be saved and reused. Dave should know as soon as he receives the cue.

Tony Glover could make a badge , perhaps even in imitation MOP , to keep the cues aesthetics.

I also think it would be better option to keep original badge, sometimes they are ok when taken out carefully if not get Tony Glover to make you a replica badge and keep original aswell from dave just incase you ever do wanna sell it in the future and you can show them original and paper work from dave.

Well, I received the cue back from Dave Coutts this week and not only did Dave do an absolutely perfect job in lengthening the cue with a lovely Thuya burr splice but he managed to save and refit the original badge. To say that I am delighted with the cue is an understatement and I even won my game in last nights league match with the cue!! I will take some photos of the finished cue and put them on here when I get a chance.
A great big thank you to Dave Coutts, the guy is an absolute perfectionist.

                          A very happy Oldgit
