  • university pool team looking for reasonable cheap cue supplier

    Hi,
I've been on this forum often and although I'm someone who has bought cues on here before or enquired about cues people from my society arent really looking to spend a lot of cash but want something half reasonable to play with on our tuesday fun night and a good starter cue.
Now I wouldn't even ask this on here but as im treasurer of this society I've been asked by the rest of the committee to do it.
We would want to have a steady supply and would have I think a minimum of ten cues bought every 6 months possibly more, we are sposored by rileys but there cheap pool cues there are terrible and these players could use something with a bit more durability. Budget at most is really £40 which I know isnt a lot of cash for a cue I bought a brittannia steel joint for 125 and that was very cheap for the cue but these guys are ooking for something to start with. If anyone could be interested in doing this for my society then please message me on here otherwise I think im gonna have to find out who owuld be interested in getting a cue find out the budget and try to find the best thing on ebay.
Sorry if this doesnt make sense been really busy and said I'd quickly put it up on here if any questions please message me could be good business if you have some machine spliced cues for sale

A starter cue neither is required to be great or expensive. Especially for pool I think the quality of cue makes very little difference, you just need to get used to it and learn how to play the game. The basic cues that rileys offer are more than good enough for this. Sometimes the cheap chinese cues on ebay are listed with pool specs and would be more than sufficient or even buy a rack cue. Could you elaborate on durability, how does a cues durability differ? I assume you mean quality? which for the £40 you will struggle to find better than either of the ones i've suggested imo

On a side note, you will struggle to find a company who is willing to subsidise, the cost of the cues if were to look for 'better' as there is very little that a university club has to offer in terms of generating extra revenue streams. From personal experience, even when your club is regarded as one of the best/biggest in the country the best I managed was securing extra sponsorship deals in return for internet advertisement. If you're lucky enough you will get a cue sports store.

      Hi Rogibear,

I did say that to people about the Chinese cues that you'll find on ebay but thought I could get someone on here if they have anything in that sense,
We are at present as a society doing quite well with sponsors but at present new people coming into the society just quickly buy a Riley cue in Riley and there such bad quality I thought someone might have a stock of these Chinese cues or something similar they'd like to sell in the coming weeks when freshers come into the society.

I'll take it back to my committee in the end and no doubt we'll sort something out but thought give it a shot on here and see if anyone had a stock of chinese cues or cues of reasonable quality at that price. To be honest my cue is for pool and snooker thats why I've got what I've got but just trying to find something for people rather than them buy 3 rileys starter cues in the year

a new starter (admittedly snooker) bought one of those Michael sets off ebay and it is quite good. I retipped it for him and he is progressing with his game.

Find one of your members who can do minor repairs or modifications to cues. I only mean like putting on a good tip and maybe reducing the size of the ferrule and perhaps taking the varnish off the shaft. It's not terribly difficult to do and can turn one of those cheap varnished cues with cheap ferrules and tips on them into something playable and it doesn't take a lot of time or money. All you need is a couple of files, some fine steel wool and some decent tips like Elk Master which only cost about 50p apiece and cheaper if you buy a box of 50.

yes I was going to say, whatever cheap cue you get, as a minimum the tip showed be replaced with a nice one, this will give newbies (without them knowing ) a better response for their efforts.
you will also need glue, my preference is Superglue Gel Repositionable as this gives you a few seconds to get the tip centred

let us know how you get on, also, whereabouts are you?

                  Thanks everyone for the help,
I'm a nottingham trent student and work at rileys nottingham as there table cleaner but I could imagine myself also retipping all the cues at some point there.
What I want to do is for people coming to our society to have a cue which is something which can be used for the price and can be used as such.
I was thinking getting these cues as at present we suggest to new people joining to get the rileys £20 cues which would be ok if they were any good but they feel terrible and the mark up rileys get off them is unreal but do agree with replacing the tip on them.
