What tip press are you talking about? Pictures would be good.

Using a small bench vice will do the same job.
Not played for 3 years and itching for a game....11-3-2017.

I was at a market stall and the guy ( who also had various sports kit tops etc, replicas? )

Also had cueballs, a box set of crystallite balls and a couple of these cheapy tip presses ( selling them for £8 or so ). But hey.. maybe I was just unlucky he had 'bad stock' that day

Have tried this in the past and you're absolutely right!

A "C" clamp will also work.

If your tip has gone hard because it has been compacted through play are those tip pick things with the spikes any good just to put a wee bit of life back into them? Is that even what they are used for
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

                This is 100% perfect advice!

I have tried just about every tip there is over the years, Elks are the best!

Although having said this they have been pressing them harder for the last couple of years so they are harder than they used to be!

Yeah i think you may have go a duff one, the one i have presses and domes the tip perfectly and is machined so well that when its closed empty you cannot find the opening. A very good piece of kit.

One thing i would say is you have to clean the inside before you use it the first few times as they use an oil in the machining process which stains the tips

no way you can soften tips with just a tip pik, they are meant to rough up the surface for chalk retention and nothing more...

Thanks , always wondered if they made the tip just soften up a wee bit, I might get a cheep one(just the key ring type) now I know.

It is possible to soften a pressed tip with a tip pik by adding more pressure pushing the pins deeper and wiggling the tip pik, effectively breaking up the fibres, good chance you'll ruin the tip though if you're too heavy handed
